Who's that there but Maxwell himself on his whirlwind vacation tour of California. He's dropped by our Silver Lake apartment for some lunch, to see the neighborhood and now to get some work done from the comforts of our couch. Talk about dedication!

That could be a DIY:
Have your local hardware store cut you 2 pieces of 1/2" Maple Veneer ply in the size/shape you want.
Glue the layers together w/ construction adhesive.
Router the edges for the bullnosed effect.
Polyurethane.
Attach hairpin steel legs (online sources have been posted here numerous times) with 3/4" screws (pre-drill pilot holes so that the wood doesn't split)
Voila: Cocktail Table!

ampersand: the coffee table was from Modernica's Case Study line. But it looks like only the square corner table and side arm are currently available. I'll inquire whether they still have the rectangular version.
You might want to drop by Modernica anyhow, since they're having their Warehouse Sale on June 7th.

Why do I have the impression he just stepped into lilliput-ville? The feet look awfully scrunched up under that teensy coffee table.

your cat doesn't look too happy to have someone taking up the sofa

It's so funny and great to see Maxwell in one of places that we first saw in the Smallest Coolest contest in - what was it? - 2005? It's like stepping into a movie or through the looking glass.

Help!
This NYer is also visiting LA for the week, and has a emergency question! I need to buy a gift for my gracious host (brother), and would like to get him some herbs for his kitchen window. I would like something relatively "luxury" as he is not the gardening type, and if I had to call him hootie tootie, I guess I would. All judgment aside, though, is there a good, fancy-pants gardening store somewhere in LA where I can get something like this? I am thinking equivalent to GRDN in Brooklyn. Any help, please email adam.tomiak[at]gmail.com
I know this post is more appropriate for an open thread, but there wasn't one recently and I need help quick. And it is somewhat on topic (NYers in LA?). Sorry and thanks!

I ask the same question as pfm; where did you get that couch?
I love it! Been searching for a simular for awhile without any results...

I had a couch like that 40 years ago. It was from a store called Foamland on Long Island and cost around $90 as i recall. Back than I considered it my pre-furniture until I could afford the real thing. It was really comfortable but didn't come in great fabric choices. Anyway, i wish I could find it again. I guess I'm in my post-funiture phase.

the furniture and the cat are great, but no one has commented on the san-x doghouse dog! i've got one of those - he has a little bird that sits under his ear. a subtle but great thing about this photo! :)

Give him a pot of jam wrapped in cloth...

Comfy? He looks like he's sitting about 4 inches too low.

great photo. I notice you have some big speakers in the room. This has always been a design problem for me. I can't get rid of my Polk Monitor 10s even though they're huge and honking and take up a good portion of my living space along with a Velodyne subwoofer (and not to mention the big plasma tv.) The Polks just sound too sweet and it would cost a couple of grand to replace their unbelievable sound. Anyway, I notice that though big your speakers seem less intrusive. Most photos on AT rarely show huge honking media systems--what do music lovers do? Any tips about how to minimize and incorporate big speakers (approx. 27" by 16" sitting on speaker stands) & media systems into your space. My living room slightly resembles yours with a case study couch & other MCM furniture. Please, what do all you music lovers in AT land do so that your place doesn't look like a heavy metal lover student's dorm?

My girl kitty is identical to that one. She'd rather be living in a nice place like your kitty!
