Look! Mixing Styles and Patterns

032008_skonahem.jpgLooking at this photo from Sköna Hem is giving us a much-needed kick in the pants to stop trying to fit all of our decor into one trend! This room (somehow) manages to mix floral wallpaper with strong stripes...antique shabby chic chairs with a Bertoia around a Saarinen table...and pair an eggplant purple Hollywood Regency-style armchair with an Ikea bookcase. Do you love it, or is it way too much for you to process? Take the survey after the jump!

It's tacky, but I happen to like tacky. The only thing that's driving me nuts is 4 different unmatching chairs altogether.

Actually, I'm okay with the unmatched chairs. It's the wallpaper in different huge patterns and Queen Elizabeth on top of it that gives me the megrims.

I think it's great. I'm moving soon and just read AT and realized I need to work on my own style. I'm working for something more cohesive than this but it's encouraging to see color and personal style pull it all together. BTW, my style is Modern (lots of PB furniture) with traditional accents (to suit our 1908 Edwardian condo).

It's very bold. I think a lot of people (including myself) are afraid to take the plunge and just do what we like, instead feeling restricted by a certain style or era. If you like elaborate floral wallpaper, shabby chic vintage finds, mid-century modern and everything in between, why not go for it?

I like all the colors and don't mind the mix of styles at all. I hate what they did with the wall on the right thought, the wallpaper and the artwork.

I like to combination of the wallpaers, but that's about it.

Saarinen and Bertoia are rolling in their graves

The chairs don't look like they're getting along with one other. All sort of slinking away from the table, giving each other sidelong glances.

farmhousemoderne - that is so spot on!

and am I the only one who doesn't know what "A totally fierce tranny hot mess" even means?

I'm so glad to see this. Even though I don't like all of it, and might not have selected it, I am so relieved whenever you feature or even notice something that is not entirely DONE, whatever the style. And I truly love eclectic. It relaxes something in me which just can't live with all one era or style or color scheme, etc.

I love a style riot just like this. It's the wonderful colors that really make it flow.

Ok. THIS is exactly the kind of thing I just adore (but would likely be served divorce papers over) and am at a loss to describe when asked what my "style" is. So glad to see this pic!

It was stupid when christian equated something being bad with being trans and it's even dumber when this site does it.

What TheoJ said. I would have voted for that option, but then I was like 'WTF?' Totally unnecessary.

I think this totally works. I would love to have Skona come over and help me with my place.

i like the juxtaposition of the tables, modern and farmhouse. and eventho QEII is an icon, i could never devote that much wall space to her, but it works here.
