Look: Modern and Affordable Residential Architecture
Austin

0908083afford-01.jpg With the number of gorgeous modern homes going up in Austin (and the rest of the country) it's easy to think modern architecture might only be in the reach of a select few. Clean lines, shiny materials and big expanses of glass windows could certainly lead one to believe so. And while some modern architecure is decidedly pricey, there are a handful of Austin architects working toward making architecture more reachable by creating inspiring and affordable designs. Read about three of them after the jump...

KRDB
Principle Chris Krager started KRDB in 2001 to create gorgeous modern architecture that could be accessible to all. Holding a Masters in Architecture from the University of Texas, Krager’s style is modern and unmistakable. Since the beginning, KRDB’s produced both small single residence homes and larger mixed used projects. With innovative materials and even better design, KRDB is helping shape the landscape of Austin with style and affordability.

090808afford-03.jpg Studio Robbins Dempsey is run by Amy Robbins Dempsey, who earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Houston and a Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. While partnered with John Beckham of Beckham Design Build, she helped create the ultra-affordable East Side home for Andy and Regina Rihn, which was featured in an issue of Dwell.

090808afford-02.jpg Architect M.J. Neal may be known for his larger, stunning specimens of modern home design, but he's also been working on affordable and inspiring homes, too. His recent work, set in Cleburne, Texas, uses industrial materials to create a simple but surprizingly large home. The price tag is a shocker (in a good way).

The last time I was down for the LARE exam I drove through a bunch of neighborhoods and took photos of all the simple, modern homes that were cropping up. My favorite was just featured in last month's Dwell.

Almost makes me sad I left Texas. Almost.

I really like the awning in the first picture... it seems pretty easy to make and is a more modern take on the traditional wooden arbor/patio covering/what have you. Just by making it slant upwards instead of downwards gives it a completely new look. Thanks for the post, great idea!
