Look! : Modern Children's Bedroom

kidsbedroom8_06.jpgLast year we watched good friends of ours struggle over decorating their new son’s room. They wanted something that was appropriate for him that wouldn’t look like fingernails on a chalkboard for them. As his mom said, "What the heck is the deal with little animals on everything?"

We definitely think that manufacturers like Modern Seed and Sparkability are clueing in to the needs of new families that don’t want ‘little chickens’ on everything. These are modern parents, who want modern kid's design.

We cut this page out of Dwell two years ago because we loved the graphic nature in which these homeowners dealt with melding their child’s bedroom in with their own style. Apparently a riff on a German painter Gerhard Richter, it reminds us of our favorite Pantone reference books and is an idea we plan to bookmark until the time comes. -Richele

I fully appreciate Maxwell's edit of my story today [at the end ... "bookmarked until the time comes"...] it's a little out of the radar at the moment and mostly I just cut it out for the graphic nature- and the story on the home itself.
But thanks you just got my mom's heart beating again! she'll be so happy.

I also tore that picture out of the magazine when I saw it. A year or so ago, I painted a similar, but smaller grid behind by bed. It was a big, blank wall, but my husband didn't want anything hanging over our heads. The grid added a lot of color to the bedroom.

I love all the modern furniture and decor that is now emerging for kids. However, I think almost all of it is ridiculously priced. The cribs are a minimum of $500, with most of them over $800 into the thousands. Who can afford to buy such a thing? Same with the "modern" crib sheets and blankets and everything else. What I'd really love to see is modern stuff that people can actually afford. Call me crazy, but $1600 for a crib - no can do.

heps -

When I saw this post, my first thought was that it would look great behind a bed! The one thing that's holding me back is how to find a small amount of a lot of colors without spending a fortune. Can you tell me more about how you did yours?
