Apparently, the secret to French chic-ness is not in the latest Karl Lagerfeld collection, but in the simple principle that a person finds the shape that fits their body, and creates outfits based on that shape using different colors and textures. In the same vein, it's a lot easier to make decision when there are less options. So why not pare down the picks: limit yourself to one color for one room, and go buckwild with shades and textures.

Language note: chic can be used as a noun. Chicness is valid, too. (I just looked this up on dictionary.com cause I was curious.)
I actually think doing a monochromatic room takes a ton of skill and discipline. It's hard to find stuff that fits the style of the room, is high-quality, AND is all the same color (spray painting adventures notwithstanding).
On Trading Spaces, it seems like the designers often try do to monochromatic rooms, with so-so results. Personally, I think rooms are lots more interesting with contrasting elements; flashes of yellow in a blue room, for example, or red and pink in a white room. But I can see why monochromatic bedrooms are so appealing, and that all-green bedroom is kickin'.
