Look!: Picture Rail Shoe Organizer

082608shoes-01.jpgAs much as we love showcasing great products over here at Apartment Therapy we equally love solutions that are readily available in the home. A shoe storage solution for this San Diego resident seems to work well for showcasing her favorite heels. Let's look at it from another angle...

082608shoe-02.jpg

082608shoe-03.jpg This picture rail molding is perfect for showcasing in-season heels. We also love the easy access of pulling down a pair of shoes to try on with an outfit in front of the mirror. Taking this idea a step further, a neat project would entail hanging a few more picture rails and create a "shoe wall." While this would work for our heels, we'd have to use a combination system where flats and boots were stored elsewhere.

Do you have a combination system for storing footwear?

They're not called "high heels" for nothing...

I don't see the problem with this, if you're viewing your shoes as art -- and if they're not too dirty. But I store my shoes in the closet: Flats and sneakers on floor-to-ceiling shelving, boots and fancy shoes in clear Container Store boxes in built-in cabinets.

I would so do this in my closet ~ not so much outside. I do have an entire unusable wall in the closet that has loads of hooks for my jewelry and scarves and a couple of Trones cabinets for shoes. This would be perfect along the top of the wall and would give me more space in the Trones.

not a fan, unless they were fabulous vintage heels meant for display only

I collect vintage shoes (small collection) and I have been looking for a display idea!

I did not like the idea on the main page of AT and I still don't like the look here in Los Angeles----it really goes beond the idea of shoes hanging for all to see. It say's something about the person who would do this (what I'm not sure at this point).
Vintage shoes on a shelf or displayed on say cubes hung on a wall is something totally different! That I would find a fun touch.

But this isn't the best angle to display them as art. Who wants to see your insoles, no matter how expensive or pristine? Put them up on the ledge, not hanging down.

Ugh.
Put them on a shelf inside the closet or a cabinet where they belong - this is so much visual clutter (as well as a dust-catcher)

This might look better lower down on a wall?
Mashalla has a similar concept here (third photo down):

I'm with palmetto... anyway it's only going to work with stripper heels.

and there's something weird about it. I think it's because they're shoes but they're up high. It feels topsy turvey.

Wouldn't these just be covered in dust within a week? Mine get dusty even behind closed closet doors.

Just wondering.

I want to like this, but there's just something not quite right about having to crane my neck to look up at shoes.

OK idea in theory, but I second the too dusty comments.

uhmm---no. Am I the only person who keeps her shoes in the boxes they came in? (and writes on the box where I bought them, when I bought them, and the price :)

It is cute but it appears as clutter to me.

while I do not care for this at all, I can see why this would be a good solution for a very small space.

This is the second shoe on the wall thing I've seen in as many days. Shoes are dirty. The idea of them being at eye-level just seems gross. If they were cleaned and put in a display case that would be one thing, but I don't think this is such a great way to display them.
