Look! : Public Art from Joanthan Borofsky

ballerinaclown[venice]a02.jpg
Located at Main and Rose in Venice. We drive by this man-clown in a tutu once a week, and every time we see it, it’s a shock.

This is public art from Jonathan Borofsky, who we have had a little thing for, ever since seeing his numbers installation a billion years ago.

Not my favorite piece by Jonathan Borofsky.

This might be the ultimate answer to the "when are you a native" question -- when you don't notice the clown when you're in a cab on the way to the airport (because if you're really a native, you cut over on Main.)

Although I'm not particularly fond of that Jonathan Borofsky piece, I did eventually become very fond of its spirit during my days living in Venice. It became a sort of "goodbye and thanks for visiting Venice" landmark, alongside the Claes Oldenburg binocular facade at the old Chiat/Day offices. I loved pointing them out to visiting guests, and was amused at their reactions of joy, disgust or confusion. Joy, disgust and confusion: Los Angeles in a nutshell.
