We initially found Elizabeth Duffy's handiwork on a Flickr user's photostream. With no information under the image but the Space Gallery that had hosted the installation, we immediately emailed them and asked for details. We learned that the artist in question is Elizabeth Duffy--an artist that showcases the items we dispose of in our everyday lives...

We're usually the ones telling clients to recycle junk mail and to halt future delivery by going to the Direct Marketing Association to opt out. And while we always try and repurpose items in the home (in lieu of buying new containers) we never imagined security envelopes being used for art. Elizabeth has managed to take the everyday item and turn envelopes into a spectacular sight. Delicate and beautiful, the envelope's plastic windows serve new purpose--to let light through. At home, mail is usually a hot topic for the disorganized--serving as a frustration in the form of piles. But on the other side of the spectrum, folks are opting to receive bills online while digitizing the process. So we find it interesting that Elizabeth uses mail in her art--calling attention to a medium that folks tend to struggle with keeping tabs on or are trying to push out of their lives altogether.

there was a post on design sponge awhile back about reversing envelopes for their security pattern. While I haven't quite mastered the art of opening them carefully enough to have a usable envelope it is fun to see the great variety in patterns on the inside of envelopes.
