Look!: Small Space, Big Style
The crew promptly arrived a little before 9am, beginning a long day together in a very small space (and without air conditioning, mind you). After surveying the lay of the proverbial land, the producer amusingly remarked that he had quite a challenge filming a 639 sq. ft apartment with nine distinct spaces, as our 1917 built studio is divided into discreet nooks and crannies that give the place both charm and architectural interest, but make for a poor location for setting up all the lights, sound equipment, and cameras required for filming the show, let alone the people themselves. They certainly earned their paychecks that Thursday afternoon, twisting, turning, bumping, and crouching all throughout the day in the pursuit of capturing the details of our home, all in high def splendor. But hats off to the crew for making it all happen, efficiently and always with an impressive can-do attitude (these guys aren't only pros, they're about the nicest bunch of fellas with a great sense of humour; we spent a great deal of the day inbetween setups chatting about interior decor, comic books, favourite concerts, literature, and T&A movie stars of the USA Network).
And that brings us to the filming itself. We have to admit that neither my girlfriend nor I are naturals on camera. In fact, I was a downright disaster initially, flubbing my first few lines into the double digits with frightening consistency, and quickly erasing any misplaced hopes of stardom as thespian/host/reality tv star with each "uhh" and "ummm" uttered. They say a camera adds ten pounds to a person. All ten pounds must have found refuge upon my tongue. A bit to my chagrin, I did not realize until the very day of filming the show uses an occupant(s)-as-host format (ironically, we don't get cable, thus have never even had the pleasure of seeing the show). But as the day wore on, I was able to dampen the crampin' of camera jitters, (hopefully) presented some of our apartment's details with a modicum of natural composure, and even did fairly well during a lengthy interview about some of the details and issues of living in a small space and in Silver Lake.
We have yet to be informed about when the show airs, but we'll holler when we catch wind of details. And please...don't laugh too much about our deer-caught-in-the-headlights delivery. At least, not too much.

OK, ever since the contest I have loved your place, but seeing this makes me ignore the house and say instead - that turquoise dress!!! SO AWESOME. Is it vintage? And if not, where can I get one??
Faith: Emily's dress is vintage, I believe purchased either thru eBay or from a flea market excursion. Its one of my favourite outfits she owns :)

I love your space every time I see it, and I would swear the colors look dramatically different in different lighting. (That's a plus with me, since they always look good -- just different.)

Hi Greg! You and Emily have such great style! I loved your apartment the minute I laid eyes on it. It was definitely a favorite of mine in the contest. Plus, your cat was super cute.
And no worries about all the "flubbing." Seriously, that's the beauty of editing. You'll see, you're going to look all polished and rockstar-like on camera. ;-)

oooh! I loved this apartment too. I'm looking forward to seeing this episode. I especially loved the sewing corner, because I'm trying to organize one for myself in my apartment.
Yes, the dress is perfect! Seeing your place makes me look forward to my vacation even more; I am visiting friends in Westwood and Hollywood (Thai Town) next week.

That first picture of Emily looks like a really pretty painting, what a gorgeous dress and color on you. It's really nice to put a face to the home and to see you interacting with your surroundings. I just love this apartment.

How cool. SSBS is one of the few remaining cool shows on HGTV. I can't wait to see this and how they filmed/edited everything.

lisa: are you referring to the mirror/clock above the vintage Bang & Olufsen stereo cabinet? I wish we indeed had a television to hang over the stereo, but alas, a LCD is not yet within our budget.
Congrats! I was in the Smallest, Coolest contest last year & thus SSBS found me & taped me in my Park Slope apt. They filmed me in June '05 but the episode (#209) didn't air until this spring -- so you might have to have some patience! I too had the deer-in-headlights look.
I could tell you two had done great things with your apartment from the photos I've seen of it before, but it's good to see you getting wider recognition for it!

If I'm not mistaken, I actually did get to see this episode on the air. I LOVE SSBS and I think I've seen every episode. I'm a sewer so I appreciate that even in your small home, you found room for a sewing room. :-)
