Take for instance Stephanie's office. The shiny and black hardwood floors (love) paired with bold yellow walls makes quite the statement. But instead of shelving which sometimes seems overwhelming in a tight space, she opted for storage underneath the sofa. Because her IKEA sofa and floors are already black, she picked up some coordinating black containers that fit perfectly underneath the couch. We love the use of Stephanie's creative storage in a room with no closets--plus the lustrous nature of the sofa and the floor make the room seem bigger.

I have similiar storage under my klippan ..... itt help me keep our center table clean and uncluttered ... mails ,magazines, little electronic gardgets .. everything goes there and is very handy as well

I dunno. This makes an airy piece of furniture look a little chunky/clunky, IMHO.

I also live in a closset-less home. I made sneaky storage by pulling my couch out from the wall and hanging an floating shelf from Ikea behind it just a couple inches shorted than the top of the sofa. The space below the shelf is great for storage now. I keep seasonal things there, and stuff I don't use often because I do have to move the couch to get at it. The walls around the couch are only about six inches wider than the couch on either side, so you can't see the stuff from any angle and it doesn't look like there are things stored back there.

No offense, but if this pic is an office like the caption reads, couldn't she have done wardrobes instead of having a couch?

I agree w/ Chrisgal -
If she needs storage, why choose a sofa and pile up the stuff in the corner and underneath?
A couple of enclosed cabinets or a credenza with a comfy armchair would accomplish the same thing and be more appropriate.
To me, this looks ad-hoc and poorly thought out.

It's fine but doesn't strike me as inordinately clever.

That shiny sofa looks like a black hole--it sucks all the light into it. I can't say I love it with the yellow walls, and the boxes underneath seem okay, if you never need to get at what's in them. But, lowish taste level.

I don't like that they're visible...it's claustrophobic and makes the space seem cluttered, even if it's not.

I'm guessing that she is working with what she already has. I'm sure that after the cost of moving, two $10 boxes seemed a lot more reasonable than buying new cabinetry or shelving. I've done the same thing with my under bed storage.

mechelle -- You can buy cheaper wardrobes - you don't need to run to your nearest Ikea or Pier One or whatever store is the fad right now. One could go as cheap as some rolling hanging carts and either mount a wall of curtains in front or even use a folding screen.

Chrisgal - those are all good ideas, but I bet none of them are still cheaper than a couple of black boxes :)

Emika - LOL, who knows with the going rate to get designer stuff anywhere?

although it's apparently unpopular, we did the same thing to deal with not having enough media storage when we moved into our small new orleans space. you actually can't really see the boxes unless they are pulled near the front of the couch.
