Look! The Horizon Hotel Palm Springs

021108horizon1.jpgWe hope all of you here in So Cal were able to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather we had this weekend. Although we stayed closer to the coast, we hear the desert was equally as lovely. ATLA reader Emilyn was able to partake in a little mid century modern fabulousness with a stay at the recently renovated Horizon Hotel in Palm Springs and shared some pics...

The Horizon Hotel was originally designed in 1952 by William Cody. In it's heyday, it was a private oasis for the Hollywood elite, including Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. But, as with many things, time took it's toll and it was due for a much needed face lift. In 2004, it shut down and had an extensive two year renovation. During that time, they practically re-built the whole place from the ground up and have now restored it, preserving its original architecture and also updating all the amenities. The decor is vintage modern glam, and Emilyn says "We had a King room... black and white minimalist, relaxing, private, calm and sophisticated. AC was a little noisy because it was right next you. Solid blinds open to sheer blinds, you had privacy, but with light and a view of the pool. Super cozy bed."

I stayed here a year ago and it was everything I had hoped for in a mid-century modern Palm Springs stay. The bed was SO comfortable and the outdoor shower was really fun (though the bathroom set-up might be a little uncomfortable for everyone but exhibitionists.) I love that they bring you complimentary continental breakfast in the morning... in bed, in your room, on the patio or at the pool.

I have been going here for years with friends and family, sadly I do miss the old decor of the pre-renovation. I love the main house at the back of the property, Truman Capote used to hide out there in the old days and it has it's own private pool if you like to swim in your birthday suit and a great fireplace. I have always loved that it's a "child free" hotel and now has strawberry cocktails served poolside. I'm surprised that it has managed to stay on the qt for so long.... darn it....I guess I'm going to have to book in advance now....
