Look! The Vitsoe Chair System - A Chair Becomes a Couch

atla-040708-vitsoe01.jpgWe’re a big fan of Vitsoe's shelving units here at AT. Did you know that they also make this chair? Every bit as classic, yet every bit as modern, we love the streamlined look and the arms, sturdy enough for a drink. But, what we adore even more is this chair's adaptability...

This is more than just a a chair, this is protein furniture (classic, well-made pieces that can grow with you) at its adaptable, flexible best. Perfect for a small apartment, it can grow into a large house. Start with a single chair and change it -- mount it on a swivel base, on feet or on castors (available for either hard floors or carpeted floors), or a mixture of feet and castors. The chair can also be changed from a low back chair to a high back chair. Or let’s say you want a sofa: Remove one of the the arms from your chair, buy another armless chair, join them together, reattach the arm and, voila, a sofa. There's no limit to the length of the sofa -- or the number of times you can subdivide it as the needs of your life change. And, even though this chair was originally designed in 1962 and only reissued a few years ago, the old ones combine seamlessly with the new ones. Now that's protein. Available through Moss. Yes, by all means, buy a second one! They can be joined together to make a twelve thousand dollar couch. I have not seen one of these in person, and they seem to look fine, but not *that* great. And while I like the idea of later being able to adapt furniture as my needs change, I'm guessing few people who are spending more than 6 grand on a single chair have a similar mindset about adaptability (although they ought to -- you don't want to have to sell that baby on craig's list).

Yeah that chair is sort of uggo. I guess you wouldn't be able to see its office chair wheels from a regular vantage point, but from here it looks like the dentist's office.

Did they steal that chair from the local clinic's waiting room? And it costs how much, exactly?

i assume you mean protean....not protein. and adaptable and flexible are synonyms for.....protean.

your description sounds more modular than protean. this will not assume different shapes or sizes ( now that's protean!) without additions or modification.

Ya'll are way too harsh on the chair/couch. I've sat in it. I love it. It's gorgeous.

AllSunday,
Actually protein was exactly the word I meant. From a concept that is outlined in the AT book. Furniture that is built to last as opposed to "carb" furniture which often falls apart. Yes it's expensive. Find one. Sit it one. See if you change your mind.

That comment was from Abby, not Maxwell.
