Look! Using An Alcove to Frame The Bed

012908_alcove.jpgIn our last apartment we had a murphy bed nook in the living room (the apartment's lore was that the building had at one point been a brothel and so there were beds in every room). You won't see it in our house tour because that's where we stashed the TV and we wanted to keep it out of frame (yes we had decor shame). Our living room had the best light and with that alcove we had often considered switching our living room for the bedroom. This image from Marie Claire Maison only makes us miss that apartment more:

We love the idea of using the nook to frame the bed and keep it feeling tucked in. For a more sophisticated take on the same idea, check out this post on

I love that nook. I would really loved if they had done some big built-in-upholstered-and-pleated headboard treatment that looked like a take on a Versailles-esque thing, but it's still pretty great.

I love how the bed looks demarcated for "your side" and "my side". Maybe on weekends they can throw on some romantic "our side" bedding.

    Enough with the TV shame!

Guess what. I watch TV. Lots of it. Tivo has improved my quality of life more than the microwave.

Can I get a holla back from anyone who put their TVs in an armoire only to never have the doors shut? An amen from the people who shoved the TV in the corner instead of putting it in the prime real estate it deserves, directly across from the comfy sofa?

And the bed in the alcove is beautiful.

I like the concept, but the two side chests stick out out beyond the end of the alcove a few inches, and that looks a little strange. gregory - I didn't even notice the "your side/my side" effect until you pointed it out, and now that is the main effect I see! Too funny.

I love TV, mine doesn't hide, it's out to watch.

I love my big TV and I love my DVR.

Anyone know where that bedspread is from?

I'm having floor envy right now.

I'm about to get a 37" flat screen, and my plan is to cut my 70" high Ivar shelving system down to 31" and put the TV right on top like artwork.

My big TV is the focal point of my living room, and I have no shame about it. That's what a living room is for, people!

I love the bed in the alcove. In my last apartment, there was an alcove that used to be a closet, and I had my bed there. It felt very safe and cozy.

My TV is out and proud, in the living room of course.

On another note, the haphazardly placed frame trend is driving me batty. Use a measuring tape and a level pretty please?

Love my big 45 inch livingroom tv, but the wall sized media room projection tv is something else! (My domestic partner finally realized his dream in our new house -- in fact that's WHY we built a new house!)

Anyhow, I LOVE that floor! Stunning! I never saw one like it and now I will be haunted by it forever, hope you guys at AT are satisfied!

I'm sure this is incredibly helpful for the 90% of apartment dwellers who don't have perfect bed-sized nooks in their bedroom walls...

Well, it was interesting and helpful to me, regardless of whether or not I have a bed-sized nook. (I don't!) I like the way it looks, and on a larger scale, it is interesting to think about and discuss how to make use of architectural features as part of home decor.

And, I notice other commentor found something interesting in the picture, apart from the nook, so it seems it was helpful as inspiration for other points as well.

Is there supposed to be another image within this post and link after "For a more sophisticated take... check out this post on?" The suspense is killing me! :P

I do love the idea of a nook-- I don't have such a thing in my room, but I know think i can recreate the cosiness with some dramatic fabric, like a half-canopy-dealy. Is this pic from Marie Claire or from your new/old place, Laure?

Well, I'm sure it's very interesting. I'd love to read the text or see the picture, even, but there is a big Weight Watchers banner ad right in the middle of this post and it won't go away. AT, I know you need to pay some bills, and I'm all for advertising, but shouldn't there be a box I can click to make this ad contract so I can, you know, read your website?
