Matching An Accent Wall with One Piece of Furniture

111808_lavendear.jpgConfession: The concept of painting an accent wall is sort of difficult for us. For some reason, our visualization of an accent wall looks more like an unfinished paint job rather than a bold decor statement. However, after contemplating this photo, we're guessing that maybe we just didn't know how to include the wall color into the room...

Well, here's one way to do it: if you decide to paint a wall an offbeat color (like this pale lavender shade), you can tie it in by matching it perfectly with one piece of furniture, like this ottoman/coffee table. You can also create more visual interest with throw pillows and mix textures like linen, velvet, and seagrass.

I don't think that's an accent wall - looks like the entire room is painted to match the ottoman...

...but it's got great style.

I agree with bepsf, it's at least two walls if not the whole room.

Waaaay too many pillows on that sofa.

The point is still valid. Using other pieces in the room - whether it is furnture, pillows, blankets, what-have-you - can complete the "look" that an accent wall hopes to create.

Agree. That's not an accent wall -- which is why the room looks so nice. Accent walls look like department store displays.

Those lights poking out of the walls look strange, though. That's a lot of stuff crammed in there. I could live without the shelf above the door,as well.

And no, it's not an accent wall.

I would disagree about matching the color of an accent wall with furnishings. The whole point of an accent- or feature-wall is to make it stand out as an architectural element; especially to make it "read" as a separate mass or plane within the space, rather than being just another side of the "box."

When you match it to the furniture you end up visually "diffusing" the shape of the wall, which kind of defeats the purpose of isolating it in the first place. Try picking a color that serves as a nice field or background for the other colors in the room.

I just like the ottoman... anyone have any idea where it might be from?

The sofa and the two salmon pink pillows look funny with that particular shade. Is it just the photo? The dog looks great - he's very comfy, thanks.
