I love goooooold! Last year, it seemed like pewter and silver was the holiday staple. This year, every catalogue we've received in the mail is spotlighting gold everything: Crate and Barrel flatware, West Elm's glass turnings, and glittery gold pillar candles available practically anywhere.

Retailers can't allow a color scheme to persist for more than one year -- how are they to sell us stuff if last year's "look" is still au current?
On the other hand, if you want to declare that gold is your holiday color, you're more likely to find some every year than if you fixated on, say, fuchsia.
Those turnings are weirdly mesmerizing. Since I can't stand turnings, I think that's more proof that West Elm is sending subliminal messages to bend us to its will.

Silver and gold may alternate popularity, but they're part of the holiday color scheme to stay.
If keeping the current trend is an important part of your decorating, select key pieces in gold and different ones in silver. You can switch out each year based on that year's "hot metal." Finally bringing out your gold or silver pieces after a couple of years of being "out of fashion" will be almost like having brand-new, or seeing an old friend after far too long.
