Nix Nature Center in Laguna Canyon

With all the new construction that is happening in OC, it's easy to forget that we still have a little untouched scenery that's so close to us! The newly opened James and Rosemary Nix Center hopes to make it easier to explore. Over the weekend, we stopped by to take a look. It has a 2300 square foot exhibition space that is divided into four sections, each offering a different view of the wilderness area.

The center is small, but it's really the trails that are the star. There's several trailheads that lead to several local wildernaess trails, including Aliso and Wood Canyon Wilderness park, and Crystal Cove State Park, as well as Barbara's Lake (which is OC's only natural lake.) If you're looking to get some real fresh air, consider taking a little detour to the center. There's also picnic tables, drinking fountains and restrooms on site. It's open every day from 9am-4pm. Admission is free, but there's a $3 donational parking fee (you put the money in an unmanned box in the parking lot). Check out their website for more info.
