Old School Moderns

Foothill Modern in Tujunga. A little known area of LA in the foothills above Glendale has more history than you'd think. More modern history that is. An ongoing exhibition is highlighting the numerous original modern houses (including homes built by Neutra and Lautner to name a few heavyweights) in the area. My favorite find is Llew Keller Jr.'s photographs and memories of living in the, then, brand new and cutting-edge Hummingbird Heaven. Built in 1952, Llew was 4 when his parents moved into the mid century post and beam style house.

Check out the exhibit's blog to find some great links and info about the area's modern history. Or take a trip out there to see the exhibit of vintage photographs, architectural plans, and original drawings of all of the region's jewels. Open Tuesdays and Sundays through August 28th at the Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga.

I lived in Tujunga in the late 70's. I must have missed this part. All I saw were aging homes and bikers.
