apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

On The Set: Chuck

040309_ChuckCourtyard.jpgIf we had to pick a favorite TV show of 2009, NBC's Chuck would definitely be in the running--at the very least, it would make the top five. This action/comedy/drama not only has witty writing and a fantastic cast, but there's also some great set decor. If you've never watched the show, check it out sometime (it airs Monday nights at 8 pm); and if you happen to be a fan, keep your fingers crossed--Chuck hasn't been renewed for a third season...yet. Check out some of our favorite sets from Chuck and Ellie's apartment...

Ellie, Chuck, and Captain Awesome's Apartment
Chuck works at the local Best Buy Buy More as the leader of the Geek Squad Nerd Herd in Burbank, CA. After getting booted from Stanford University for allegedly cheating, Chuck moved in with his old sister Ellie (a doctor) and her fiancé, a surgeon nicknamed Captain Awesome, in their 1920s Spanish-style apartment in Echo Park. On his 28th birthday, Chuck receives an email from his former college roommate now working in the CIA; the message embeds the only remaining copy of the government's greatest spy secrets in his brain.

Living Room

040309_ChuckLiving.jpgThe living room uses a warm color palette of mainly reds and beige tones mixed with highlights of pale mint green (like the bookcase against the wall) and dark shades of hunter green (like the comfortable armchair in velvet). Other great details in the apartment include the ornate front door and picturesque windows with its glass panes.

040309_ChuckLiving00.jpgIron wrought wall decoration flank the focal point of the living room where the TV is mounted on the wall. The seating arrangement is ideal for both television watching from the sofa; or socializing with the two armchairs facing each other.

040309_ChuckLiving01.jpgA view of the living room from the window.

Dining Room

040309_ChuckDining.jpgOne thing that we particularly love about the dining room is how casual and realistic the space feels: The dining table looks like it was scored secondhand and the chairs are mismatched. For many of us, hosting a dinner party (or Thanksgiving, in this case) forces us to be resourceful to find enough seating and place settings.

Kitchen
040309_ChuckKitchen.jpgProbably our favorite room in the entire series: Ellie's kitchen. We've been obsessed with how great the Spanish tiles look in this quaint kitchen with a vintage stove and tiled countertops. The mint green color that was used as an accent in the living room is carried over in full force in the kitchen with the cabinets and complements the royal blue tile edging beautifully.

040309_ChuckKitchen01.jpgA lot of older apartments have funny built-ins, like the one featured behind Chuck's best friend, Morgan. Instead of stashing random odds and ends, Ellie's everyday plates are stacked neatly on the shelves. Her glass-paneled cabinets display the prettier dishes and feature under-the-shelf lighting on each level.

Chuck's Bedroom

Chuck's bedroom looks like any younger brother's (or really, any video game/Comic-con/computer-loving guy's) bedroom with Tron and Dune posters, game consoles, and an impressive computer display. But amid all of this are a few great Danish pieces, like his TV stand/credenza and desk...not to mention some reminders of the apartment's design like the fireplace in the corner with the Spanish-tiled surround.

Courtyard

040309_ChuckCourtyard01.jpgMan, how great is this courtyard? Perfect for hosting parties (if the neighbors are nice); or even just hanging out, which sort of reminds us of that movie from the 90's, Singles.

040309_ChuckCourtyard.jpgDetail of the central fountain--love the flower-like shape of the base.

Sarah Walker's Home at the Viceroy

As Chuck's fake girlfriend/CIA handler, Sarah Walker's "home" is at the posh Viceory Hotel in Santa Monica, famously decorated by Kelly Wearstler.

Love it. Beautifully styled without being over-the-top like Pushing Daisies. Although, I loved Pushing Daisies.

Doesn't that courtyard remind you of the old set from 90210?

Touching on theglossies1 comment about recycled sets, I swear the interior of Two and Half men is the old set from Laverne and Shirley when they moved to LA.

That's the show I was thinking of - Thanks!

I like Kelly Wearstler, but HATE the Viceroy. We used to stay there pre-KW when it was the Estrella Inn -- a 1920s courtyard style hotel with Spanish-style bungalows. It was adorable. Why KW took a lovely old bungalow court and turned it into an over-the-top pastiche Regency nightmare is beyond me. Especially where there are so many properties in Palm Springs that actually ARE Regency.

I love Chuck!

And seaside - what are the chances?! I thought the SAME THING about Two and a Half Men's set recycling the Laverne & Shirley set!! If not the whole thing, at least the staircase.

Arroyo, I never stayed at the pre-Viceroy Estrella Inn but I really love the decor of the Viceroy. To me that was KW at her peak, before she went all 80s-weird. The yellow library with the shag carpeting is almost tongue-in-cheek, but not quite. I had a great stay there and thought the design was brilliant. (Admittedly, this was before Regency was done and overdone by so many, including KW...)

Arroyo, it's the Santa Monica Viceroy, not the one in Palm Springs.

I love Ellie and Awesome's apartment!! I wonder, does that building actually exist, or is it a manufactured set? I would love to go to LA and see it. Glad to see I'm not the only one who is detail-obsessed and loves the Spanish-tiled kitchen, warm living room colors and funky built-ins!!!

Chuck is back in March - now that is truly awesome.
