On The Set: Monster-In-Law

110509_monsterHouse.jpgA long, long time ago, I confessed to watching Monster-In-Law while hungover and obsessing over the decor and ignoring the storyline. This was long before we ever started doing On the Set features; so when I received a few emails from folks wanting more details of this lovely Pasadena Craftsman home, I figured: why not? Here's a few photos from the movie of Charlie and Kevin's home...

This gorgeous Craftsman home was designed by the Hinemman brother and decorated for the film in an intriguing mix of traditional California architecture with mid-century modern furnishings and accented with Asian-inspired elements. One thing we noticed was the use of different kinds of wood in the actual home, which offers a warmer atmosphere to the space but still keeping the overall look masculine.

Porch

110509_monsterPorch.jpgLike most Craftsman homes, the porch is big enough to create an outdoor sitting nook. We also love the outdoor curtain that offers a little bit of shade and privacy. Or maybe those are icicle lights...? Hard to tell from this shot.

Entry

110509_monsterEntry.jpgThe first thing we notice aside from the vintage subway roll is the dark outline along the doorways and molding, emphasizing the lines and angles of the home.

Den

110509_monsterDen.jpgThe light fixtures used throughout the home have the same shape and look as Japanese paper lanterns, but we like the mix of rounder lights like the George Nelson bubble lamps with the boxy style of the floor lamp pictured here.

Living Room

110509_monsterLiving.jpg

110509_monsterLiving2.jpgThe couch introduces some texture and color: a collection of throw pillows in bright colors and bold floral graphics paired with a unique throw blanket offsets the strong lines of the living room.

110509_monsterLiving3.jpg

Dining Room

110509_monsterDining2.jpgThis collection of chairs give the formal dining room a more casual look, but it's not totally mismatched: from the looks of it, they all hail from the ever-popular mid-century modern style.

110509_monsterDining.jpgAt the intimate rehearsal dinner, the table setting is bit more casual and fun: low flower arrangements and votives decorate the long table.

Kitchen

110509_monsterKitchen.jpgThe kitchen follows the same mix of modern with traditional: Modern stainless steel shelving and top-of-the-line appliances play nice with vintage tiles and farmhouse-style cabinets.

110509_monsterKitchen2.jpgPerhaps the worst decor decision I've seen in a movie or TV show: JLo, painting Laura Ashley roses on the wall of that kitchen. Actually, no; I take that back: This will forever be the worst decor decision I've seen in a movie or TV show.

Bathroom

Bedroom

110509_monsterBedOffice.jpgThe bedroom doubles as a home office on one side.

And finally, the best part about this whole movie:

You're welcome. Happy Friday!

Ha!
I love this house, but as I scrolled through the pictures, I kept thinking "Why is there no Michael Vartan??!"

Beautiful house, beautiful man. Great work. (Bad movie.)

With such a big house, why would they need to make their bedroom an office, too? (This is why movies aren't fun for the people who watch them with me.)

editrix26 -- I had the same thought when I watched this movie...there was plenty of space to incorporate that desk elsewhere, so why cram it in the bedroom?

yeah definitely looks like a bad movie, in the recession they show craftsman style houses with a bit of dishevelment so the home envy fantasy can still be had.....but its still unrealistic to the average american. And yeah are there no straight men or lesbian women or for that matter anyone who doesn't find a topless white male attractive on this site, come.... keep the intelligence a part of apartment therapy

Thanks for including the last pic!
brocktontriangle, this movie is like 5 years old. The recession is not. Calm down.

lol this movie came out at the peak of the economic boom when JLo was still putting fur on as false eyelashes...and you are saying this looks like a bad movie from a couple screen shots? that's really going with your gut...I actually watched this so I know my gut was off that day. And the guy in the movie is a doctor..that's generally recession proof.

All I remember from watching this movie is the kitchen. It's so nice. I definitely had kitchen envy.
