Scavenging doesn't always work out, especially when buying something that comes with a plan, i.e. "It looks nice, but it could use a paint job or new upholstery...and it's only $10!" But when it does work out, it becomes a favorite piece--or at the very least, a great DIY story to tell all your friends and neighbors. We suspect that these lockers could be just that for Paper Pony: Bought off of a school district maintenance man for a mere $15, she spray painted the door a soft green and moved it into her garage/office as her arts and crafts organizer.

Adorable! I would love to have lockers like that for my knitting and sewing stuff. Such a great idea. Adding this one to my design folder!

Man! How do people find amazing deals like this? That's totally incredible, and such a good price to boot. You could spend hundreds of dollars at Ikea trying to replicate that look.
Anyway, I love it. Great job.

I'd love to have something like this in my office/work area if I had one! Looks awesome.

I found some great lockers like this on the street years ago. Sadly, mine are blue and I'd love them to be a sort of brushed metal color. Can metal like this be stripped easily? What would you seal it with later?

That turned out really well. Great deal, too!

Cara -- find a warm day and buy some ugly, nasty, toxic stripper -- I know, I know, but the nasty stuff works best.
Do it outside, somewhere breezy, and away from people you like.
Scrub down with 0000 steel wool. Minor rust will come off... major stuff you can buy products like Evapo-Rust to dissolve.
Bare steel likes to rust fast so try to work in concentrated bursts.
Finally, buy 3 or 4 cans of clear varnish or polyurethane, follow the instructions, and try to only make drips and messes on the inside. Again, away from people you like. Let dry, enjoy!
OR -- hire a fabrication shop to sandblast and clearcoat.
goodluck!
