apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Point Dume, Malibu Residence
The New York Times 11.26.08

112808malibuhome06.jpgDespite the faux rivalry between LA and NYC, we've noted that the New York Times oftem reveals a fondness for Southern California lifestyle and residences in their Home & Garden section (we know quite a few former Big Apple residents who call the Westside of LA home...they gruffly admit loving the Cali coast). This week they've highlighted a luxurious aspirational Malibu Point Dume residence that has us practically smelling the saline infused air and feeling the Pacific breeze...

112808malibuhome05.jpgThe couple have traveled extensively, which can be seen in their house’s furnishings, fittings and artwork, coordinated by Ou Baholyodhin, a Thai-born artist and interior designer based in London. A headdress from Zambia is displayed near the entrance of the living room, and replicas of three large Thai monastery bells (made by Chris Lehrecke, a sculptor in Bangall, in upstate New York) are used as a chandelier in the hall; there are also massive vases from Thailand, a colorful layered painting from Ethiopia and shelving by the New York designer Rhett Butler. Outside, huge eroded rocks found in a riverbed in China, bought from a nearby gallery, serve as sculptures.

I might sell my first-born for the hardwood flooring. Nah, but I would breed a second one in exchange for a houseful of it. ;)

See that big ledge by the windows? Perfect spot for a couple of towels and a bathrobe...

Love the house!

As for the "faux rivalry between LA and NYC," it was very real when I was living in The City and traveling fairly regularly to LA for productions. But, maybe that was just me...
