Putting An Empty Frame To Use

090109frame-01.jpgWe've seen empty frames used as wall decor but we're really liking this idea of accentuating a wall of vinyl decals. The flowers appear to twirl around the frame, integrating it into the space...

The empty gold frame also adds texture to the wall and creates a more dramatic focal point. We think this idea would be great as a faux headboard, the space above the couch or your home's entryway. We could also see this idea as inspiration for a drab mantlepiece--making it instantly dramatic. It's an easy DIY for wood frames by spray painting them a lustrous color or keep it simple and classic with white.

I really like this idea a LOT, but I wish the decals weren't shiny. This reminds me of a picture I saw in a magazine several years ago. It was of a bedroom that had one wall that had been wallpapered with gigantic red flowers (maybe 5 or 6 flowers on the entire wall) – and several of the flowers had been framed like these. I have never been able to find a similar wallpaper but this decal idea might be a good substitute.

Has anyone else ever seen the kind of wallpaper I’m describing? Each flower was maybe 18 – 30 inches. I’ve never seen a wallpaper with such a gigantic print before or since.

nice! brings new meaning to thinking outside the box. :)

mlleErica, the wallpaper you describe sounds awesome! Maybe you can get away with finding a fabric that has oversized florals and staple that to a panel, then put it on the wall and do the smaller frames idea.

mlieErica, you may be talking about the the giant red flower decals from IKEA?

The decorative wall stickers in this post are from IKEA as well.

I like it. Especially because it's so affordable.

Empty frames look awesome if you paint with chalkboard paint inside...doesn't have to be black chalkboard either since they come in so many colors.

We're thinking about doing that on our kitchen wall above our banquet...we can plan out our weekly menu on it!

I kinda agree with sally305 here. Wall decals and empty frames both seem very trendy to me, nothing I'd want to live with. Pretty in photos, though!

I love this.

Bitdot, you should definitely do a chalkboard for your kitchen (despite the haters on here, lots of people do like them, and if you want it, who cares what they think). I did one on my backdoor and put an art deco frame around it. It's fun.

lovely! i have an obsession with exposed brick, and am happy with the effect i got with an antique frame (from a garage sale giveaway, thank you very much) hung in a brick space.
