Remembering Ettore Sottsass

061008EttoreSottsass1.jpgIf you were to ask us which design objects we most covet, amongst our top ten would undoubtedly be Ettore Sottsass' Valentine typewriter. Designed for Olivetti in 1969 and now in the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art, Sottsass' design embodied the playful aesthetic that was evident throughout his career as an industrial designer. Ettore Sottsass was recently revealed at the 2008 Salone Internazionale del Mobile...

061008EttoreSottsass2.jpgSottsass' final project, the Emeco Nine-0 Swivel Armchair, would make an excellent pairing with a Valentine typewriter. The Nine-0 collection are the last chairs designed by Mr. Sottsass, who died on December 31, 2007 at the age of 90 and is available in a choice of a hand brushed or hand polished aluminum frame, with a polyurethane seat and back in blue, grey, green, orange and red via DesignPublic.

I also love these vintage manual typewriters, but I would have to list the Olivetti Lettera 32 ahead of the Valentine. In terms of practicality, durability and compact efficient styling, it is hard to beat. And you can get them for a much better price on eBay than the Valentine!
