apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Rentometer

The topic of how much one pays for rent is always a popular one in this town, right behind celebrity sightings at the Grove and the debate about exactly where the "Eastside" in Los Angeles begins [opening can of worms]. People are always curious what others are paying, and in relation, whether what they pay themselves is a good deal. And now thanks to a tip from Curbed LA we can refer to Rentometer to see whether your friend's rental is really the sweet deal he's often proudly proclaimed.

Enter determinants including location, the amount of bedrooms and number of units in the building and the site will report back whether the rent falls above, within, or below the average of the neighborhood, including a Google map that reveals the rent of nearby units. The more people who participate, the more accurate the meter becomes.

This is fantastic, if you have an address, but can someone tell me what to do if I am planning to relocate to LA and want to know the average prices per area? Please help, as we are moving across the country and want to compare areas and prices.
Any recommendations on up and coming areas? Hot spots? Great new locals? It's been a few years since we have been.
Thank you!!

Very cool indeed!!! I'm currently looking for a a new place (ditching the roommates once and for all) and this Rentometer will come in handy. Thanks!

The only thing that this does not take into account is whether the apartments have certain utilities paid by the landlord and if they are/aren't furnished. Makes a big difference in rents. Nevertheless, this is definitely a good tool.

Wow! That's really cool. To my surprise all my neighbors aren't paying a lot less than me. Oodle does something similar looking at current housing listings, check out the LA Housing for Rent page. (Full disclosure - I work at Oodle but on another project.)
