Pop Art Inspired Apartment Before and After Makeover

Our friends over at KNQ Associates sent us this fun and colourful before and after update of a one-bedroom apartment in Singapore, a small space transformation of a blank canvas home into a 60's pop art inspired interior with maximum visual impact and layout flexibility (looks like there's a strong international trend of using orange these days)...

Designer Stanley Tham explains: In the living and dining areas, 'clashing' hues of orange, yellow, red and brown turn the once ho-hum interiors into an ultra hip and cozy chill-out pad. A bright orange sofa picks up the tone on the wall at the dining area, which is adorned with Warhol style paintings Due to the limited space available in the bedroom, a corner of this space is sectioned off as a work area. The customized TV system allows the TV to be adjusted and viewed from all corners.

Inside the kitchen, the original floor and wall tiles were retained - a very fitting choice given that the tiles do look 'dated'. And well, doesn't those juicy lime green doors just makes cooking that much more enjoyable?

In the bedroom, things are kept simple and functional in view of the lack of space. A partition wall was erected to carve out a walk-in closet, with the remainder of the space taken up by the bed. The deep blue color used here injects a sense of tranquility. Not sure if Hello Kitty's happy with the choice of color though, ha!

You mean they actually ripped out wood kitchen cabinets and replaced them with a white and green laminate kitchen - but didn't touch the awful orange floor tiles?

And they ripped out a bathtub and marble-tiled bathroom and replaced it with a shower and a slightly different shade of marble tile and plain white flooring (and a Hello-Kitty vinyl showercurtain that doesn't even reach the floor)???

This place isn't "Ultra-Hip"...
...more like "Ultra-Cheesy/Ultra-Cheap" - perfect for a colorblind pre-Teen girl.

...the "Before" was far, far better.

Where is that cool clock from?? Anyone?

There are a lot of funky aspects to this place! But yes, please, get rid of the kitchen tile, they really don't jive with the rest of the place which is fully commited to the pop/modern aesthetic.

I guess some people focus more on materials and some more on shape. The before kitchen looks generic and dated to me (that's just my personal association in my brain with wood cabinets, no matter how 'pretty'. No you're not going to 'fix' my brain to like them just because they are wood), the before bathroom feels oppressive with all that dark marble. I like the updates, and if it were my space I wouldn't care that expensive materials would have to go if their result does not work for me in the space.

I feel I can pinpoint the person that lives in this apartment in a crowd of people - but can't do it here.

Good job with the larges windows and airy feel in the living area.

BUT Does it hurt to lower the toilet seat??? Especially when u are doing a photo shoot? I don't think the bathroom looks any better. Same dark tiles all the way to the ceiling just different color. Makes the space look small. What is up with the baby-doll-sized shower curtain - they spend a fortune on tiles and such and could not afford a glass shower divider???

I agree with bepsf... "Ultra-Cheesy/Ultra-Cheap" - perfect for a colorblind pre-Teen girl.

Looks like an ad from Urban Outfitters.

the kitchen cabinets in the "before" picture is probably wood laminates and not solid wood doors...that is usually the standard finish we get from new condos/apartments here

hate the leopard print cushions and tacky dining chairs....been done a million times, interior decorators here just copy each others designs and you just keep seeing the same things everywhere

way too tacky to appear on AT.....

Maybe I don't 'get' pop art decor, but I didn't really like this reno. I think the problem is that the place stopped just short of full commitment to the style. It seems...unfinished.

I didn't like the bathroom in either the before or after. All that dark marble seems oppressive in such a small space. The tiny plastic shower curtain in the 'after' really confuses me too. It not only looks bad and cheap, but seems like it wouldn't work very well at keeping water from spraying all over the bathroom.

The flooring in the kitchen ought to be replaced to match the new cabinets. It makes them look harsh rather than fresh and clean and the cabinets just make the tiles seem even more dated (and not in a good, retro way).

Maybe it's just the photograph, but the light over the bed seems very bright and glaring. It doesn't seem very tranquil to me.

But these are all somewhat small things. I hope the place is still a work-in-progress.

I kind of like it! Except for Mao and the shower curtain. (I might change a few other details, but the look is fine with me overall. And as long as I don't have to live with him, Mao looks good in the room...)
