In our tiny bedroom we just don't have the option of putting our bed against a plain wall; every single wall has a window, a door, a couple of windows or a closet. And the whole thing is already barely big enough to fit a bed into. So we are going to embrace having the bed up against a window and are drawing from this bit of inspiration:
Using sheer curtains layered below thicker curtains helps to create an anchor out of the window. The thicker curtains on either side provide a frame for the bed and the sheers afford a certain amount of privacy and they keep they scare black window effect from happening at night. It makes the bed look like it's supposed to be in front of the window instead of awkwardly fighting with it for space. Have you tried this at home? How has it worked out?

This looks beautiful and perfectly appropriate -
It's when folks put the bed in front of a window that's off-center and the draperies (if any) only cover that narrow window that the bed looks out of place.

I wonder if this would work in the unfortunate case of having to put the bed off-center in front of the window, i.e., the bed is in front of half of the window. Maybe I can create an optical illusion with drapery.

In our last apartment, we did this exact thing without even having a headboard. Sheers inside the window, velvet on the outside and centering the bed. Supposedly it's bad feng shui to have your bed in the window - but I loved it. Also, it was the window for the fire escape, so we couldn't block the swinging metal gate for safety's sake. The bed was at the same level as the deep windowsill and we just used it to extend our pillows upward and make our full bed longer, since we're both tall. I also really liked having the open window right next to my head in the summer.

This arrangement looks very nice indeed. I would only regret losing some light from the window.

Having your bed under the window is one of life's great pleasures. You can easily open or close the window during the night, and you get a delightful breeze on your face. Its one of my favorite things, ever, period. Enjoy it!!

I noticed that Nicole at Making It Lovely has her bed in front of a window, and it looks fab.

My bed is in front of windows, and I use creme colored sheer curtains. I love it, although being right next to the window can get a little cold in the winter. Go for it!

We have our bed in front of IKEA vivan curtains - I love the way it works. It lights up the whole room in white. I hadn't thought about framing the whole thing with heavier curtains, though. I'll have to keep an eye out.

I would love to do this in my bedroom, but we NEED an A/C in the window in the summer. :(

Growing up in CA this was always very off limits at our house in case of an earthquake, but it is the only wall to put our bed on in our Chicago home and I have to say as beautiful as it is, it still makes me feel queasy about a broken window.

Yeah I would just suggest you prepare to have shards of glass fall all over your face during an earthquake.

I think this looks beautiful. And if you are worried about glass shards in an earthquake, look into getting those windows tinted with window film. It comes in varying grades of tinting and is done in such a way that I don't even notice it's there, but my furniture doesn't fade (and the film would keep the glass from flying if for some reason it was broken).

It looks lovely but it's bad feng shui so I could never do this. :/

I ended up putting the bed at an angle between two windows. it takes up more floor space but felt a lot better that way and I didn't worry about glass falling in my face every time the house shook.

We tried this in our place & everything I did to change it & mimick the photos I fell in love with just did not work.. Our windows are really tall & slender. I tried using them wider to make the window look wider & everything and it just looked like the bed righting the window for your attention.. I hated it & moved the bed back off the wall.
I love the look of the curtains enveloping the sides of the headboard/bed. It just looks so comforting & rich. My headboard right now stinks, but I haven't had anytime to make it feel more welcoming. I am jealous of this as it makes me want to curl up & go to bed! Not really a good thing for a law student lol

wow ok so re-read that now.. Lots of typos.. I tried pulling the curtains out wider to make the window look wider... and *fighting not righting the window haha

I have the same issue as ValHalla (2nd question from the top) - any advice on what to do if your bed HAS to be off-center in front of a window? I live in a tiny studio and there's a window behind precisely half my headboard. Maybe faking it by buying a long curtain bar to bridge the gap? I'm stumped.

Yes, you most definitely can fake a bigger window and make the bed look centered by extending the drapery as though there were a window there.

I have a similar effect in my bedroom, the room isn't small at all, but between the door on one wall, a large marble fireplace on another and a pair of slenderish (each about 500mm wide) (with about 100mm between them )windows on the third, the flow of the rooms works best with the bed slotted neatly below the window, rather than curtains though, I have wooden Venetians, which allow me greater control over light and privacy (the windows look out over my fairly private front garden) plus continue the lines of the bed and my floorboards nicely. My only complaint is the rattling sound they make at 4am when my cat climbs over my head to make sure our house isn't being invaded.

Gee, my favorite thing is to have the bed under the window, either with sheers or open curtains. I need that extra bit of light in my face to help me wake up naturally.

Besides having people's headlights flash on us at night, my cats would sit in the window sill and bop us on the heads when they wanted us out of bed at 3 or whatever.
view whytephoenix's profile
We had to do this in our apartment for the same reason - doors on three walls, so the only option was putting the bed in a window. As we are in the small cool contest, I can show you a picture of what we did.
view Matilde's profile
PS - you'll notice we use a bamboo shade instead of sheers - that's because there's a building directly opposite, and we wanted something more opaque that would still let light in but allow more privacy.
view Matilde's profile
This is exactly what we did in our bedroom...I actually wanted the bed on the wall opposite the window, but boyfriend won out, and I have to say I love it...now you see the whole room as you walk in, versus running into a bed.

Where's the heat coming from in this room? Everywhere I've lived has had radiators right under all the windows. Is everyone just positioning their beds in front of the radiators?
