Small Space Prefab: Prototipo 10x10
Two things we cover with passion here are small space living and prefab solutions, two lifestyle/design solutions we think will pick up steam in a slowing economy (at least we hope so). So we always take notice when we see architects experiment with structure solutions that combine these two ideals, such as Mexico's Stacion Arquitectura's Prototipo 10x10, an architectural project developed for Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey's 10 Houses for 10 Families challenge. Stacion Arquitectura documented the step-by-step process of erecting their concept, from opening the delivery crate to putting the finishing touches...
Admittedly we don't see structures like this appealing to the American way of life, but in countries where smaller space living is the norm, or in conditions where temporary housing is needed, a structure like the Prototipo 10x10 could be a welcome solution for housing needs. For Americans, the Prototipo 10x10 could be an ideal exterior small office solution (it would look great complimenting a Midcentury home, don't you think). The question, as always is the case, is when will ideas like the Prototipo 10x10 become an option for middle class purchasers who want to adopt prefab solutions that have been extolled for ages now, but have yet to see the light of day beyond shelter magazines and websites?

From the amount of work they are doing in those pictures, it hardly seems "prefab".
