The Carry All Technique of Furoshiki

furoshiki_atla07.gif
Nearly every Sunday we carry 4-5 canvas tote bags over to Hollywood Farmer's Market to fill up with our weekly groceries. Totes are great for obvious ecological reasons, but maybe the next big thing will be the return of furoshiki, the traditional Japanese fabric folding technique used to transport just about anything. Need to carry a melon? Use the suika tsutsumi fold. Two bottles of your favourite vintage? Bin tsutsumi does the trick. Think of it as practical fabric origami for transportation. Furoshiki.com has 14 different folding solutions for just about anything you'd be able to tote or carry, but all without the need to remind the world that it's "not a plastic bag".

I really like this idea for gift wrap! I can see a gift tied up in a beautiful silk scarf...

Cool post!

My Japanese mother-in-law and her sister will always arrive at a potluck carrying their furoshiki wrapped dishes - so lovely to see.

I've made a quick furoshiki purse out of a piece of cloth when none of my other purses match my outfit! More importantly... I can make a larger bag with a larger piece of cloth when I go to the grocery store.

Thanks for inspiring me to make a post about it here....!
