By now you might have passed by Royal/T over in Culver City a few times and wondered what was within the faux lawn covered facade. It's not quite in the heart of Culver City's healthy gallery and furnishing district, so it can be easy to pass over. But walk inside their doors and what you're presented with is a surprising physical representation of the cultural fusion in food, art and design happening here in Los Angeles in a retail/gallery/cafe form, a microcosm of LA's hodge podge nature offering art, design and food all under one roof, making it one of the most interesting gift stores in the city...
The space within can be a bit overwhelming, but always fun and inspiring: the hallway display of modern artwork, cosplay waitress outfits, an eye candy laden retail store currently hand decorated and designed by LA's Poketo, alongside a myriad of interior touches (love the large chandelier) that give the space a playful contemporary presence that exemplifies LA's vibrant art and design scene. And for all those reasons, Royal/T has become our favourite destination to conclude a day of shopping when in the vicinity of H.D. Buttercup, Room & Board, Vitra and all the other design retailers around Culver City area, if only for the tasty snacks.
Royal/T is currently hosting a Poketo pop-up store within it's expansive space, a small store-within-a-store filled with a lineup of home and fashion wares designed by a various local and international artists (we particularly like their plate sets); you can conclude your visit with a special menu put together by Angie and Ted of Poketo, dining on some of those same plates, while getting an up close look at the rotated personal art collection of owner, Susan Hancock (her art pedigree is too long to list here, but you can read about her here) .
And if you're free this Friday night, please stop in...I'll personally be playing the role of Simon or Paula (depending upon mood) as one of the judges for the Poketo Karaoke Dance Party.
