apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Tjep Relaxation Room

072308tjep-rugwall.jpgHere's an interesting idea of using rugs not only for flooring, but also continuously all the way up the walls (and in this case, seating) in a room. The effect is dramatic and cozy; the room's acoustics must be perfect for intimate conversation...and perhaps more.

072308tjep-rugwall2.jpgDesigned by Tjep for skincare company ROC, the "protective shelter" is a large box with a garage door like opening, with built-in seating for relaxation. The contrast between the stark white structure and its traditional ornate interior makes this a dream poolside cabana. And we especially like how you can see people's legs peeking out from underneath.

I dunno, I'm not feeling these rugs. Seems like they would have something more interesting inside.

Seems like it'd be dark, dank, and kinda smelly.

I can barely afford furniture as it is...now people are covering theirs in oriental rugs? Ouch. I think it could lead to a cool design but I'm not digging the look with these ones.

Yeah, it is a bit much but there is a fabulous restaurant in m 'hood (Vancouver, Canada) that has mounted beautiful rugs on the walls and has one wall completely texturized. I asked the owner how he did it and he said he got some hay (!!) and mixed it with the paint ... whatever the technique it looks sooooo cool. Plus, they serve the best roti and chai shakes! :)

When my parents used to live in a village, they did not have any furniture and they had turkish rugs all over the house, like the picture above. They were primarily red and all hand made. When they took me to their village years ago, I did not like that idea but now I wish I had something like this that would remind me my place of origin.
