Ty-tanic Sears Sale of Ty Pennington Style Line

tyssearssales_atla022208.jpgBefore you blow off checking out these items because: 1) they belong to the Ty Pennington Style line and/or 2) they're sold at Sears, we'd recommend you at least take a peek. A great deal of his current home decor collection is on sale at notable discount amounts. Our favourite items on sale? The white Ceramic Perforated Vases for $5.99, as nice as anything we've seen at any other discount retailers.

Woah... I'd really blow off checking out and considering this line beacuse they are made cheap and won't last you a week. The style is not bad, but I worked at Sears before and the floor displays would fall apart almost instantly. Some came out of the boxes damaged and the rest would break apart within a week or a few days of being out or having customers sit on chairs or sofas. This is worse than Ikea. The prices too are outrageous for the quality. Ikea is 10 times better for value. Just beware!

After reading weezerad79's comment, I want to clarify my comment to say that the "look" of his stuff doesn't suck. Thanks for the info on the durability! I don't care how good looking something is if it doesn't last for long.

haven't we gotten over being squeamish about ty? he may decorate for mainstream america on that show but in real reality he has an organic modern sensibility that's fresh and clean.

OK, I just got my car's oil changed at Sears this past Wednesday. This TP stuff was right next to the auto shop section. The setup was literally tires then furniture. (I had no idea that these pieces were even TP until I saw this post just now). I had to walk through Sears (gag me) in order to get to the mall. My first impression of that chair and sofa was Eames knockoff. And that would be perfectly alright to me if the pieces looked even remotely well made. They did not, however. They looked like K-mart furniture and I'm not one of those holier than thous that thinks that all decent furniture should cost at least $1,000. The pieces simply look cheaply made.

The table, however, was not a total bad piece, it just wasn't great. I did not see the bed. I did see the night tables because they were right next to the table...cheap looking. If you can't afford new expensive stuff, go with secondhand quality pieces.

The lemongrass and bali plates look remarkably like ones I always see in Chinatown (and have always like alot). I wonder how they compare in person.

Dude, posts like this make me want to kick AT in it's collective gut. How the hell smug is anyone to discredit someone's merchandise just based on his tv persona? Even when his store in Venice opened, AT seemed amazed that Ty would have tasteful items for sale. Just because he doesn't have umlauts over the vowels of his name and someone other than failed design students know his name doesn't mean that he can't have designed something worthwhile. smug smug smug.

Ty is a likeable guy, and I do enjoy his designs. However, when I went to Sears to look at his bedding line in person I chose not to buy...the quality just isn't there.

I wouldn't have been as angry if the concerns over Penninton's line were about quality - From my own personal experience as well as others here, Sears products are usually poorly made. But there seems to be utter amazement on AT whenever a mass market brand produces something nice. That, I hate.

The designs on Ty's show are across the board ugly. It's not surprising that people would assume his products are ugly too.

If you notice, they don't mention that assembly is required and they don't tell you what any of these pieces are made of.

Also, is he pictured sticking a tape measurer up his nose? What class.

Keep in mind that the furniture is only as good as the manufacturer makes it. It's not Ty's personal fault that the furniture is poorly made. I'm sure he is given specific restrictions to keep within a certain price point.

I think he is an excellent carpenter so the Sears line to me is just his name being slapped on it... not his personal work.

Here's his real furniture line

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt if he hadn't ripped off Michael Aram's washer bowl in both concept and execution. So much for original design...

aw I really like Extreme makeover home edition! Even if I'm not a fan of overly themed kids rooms, I love the theme of the show, helping people in need. :)

chusmabilly: I don't think I made any disparaging remark about Ty besides implying some people wouldn't give him a chance because of bias. I actually like him alot...his enthusiasm, vibrant personality and good nature is admirable.

But I know a lot of people who did blow off my recommendations to check out his line when I'd mentioned how great some of the pieces looked. I don't think some of the items necessarily reflect what I or many people would expect from Ty, and I'm glad it's being offered at the more affordable spectrum. If there was any surprise, it was one of positive vibes enough that I wanted to post about. No Haterade here, friend!

I think the Ty scrutiny is both expected and well-deserved. I mean, any product with some celebrity's name slapped on it is going to garner some skepticism. Add to the fact that Ty whores his brand out on tons of other stuff besides the Sears stuff. And unlike the Jaclyn Smiths, Cindy Crawfords and Andre Agassis of the world, Ty is just too frickin' annoying for words.

That being said, I am pleasantly shocked that I like the design of some of these Sears items, especially the dressers. However, the price and the complete absence of a proper description gives me pause. I guess I will have to hunt for an actual Sears to check this out in the flesh.
