Wallpaper One Wall, Paint the Others?

071608_wallpaperone.jpgWe spotted this very pink room in the latest issue of Sköna Hem, and initially we thought the accent wall was painted a muted pink to give more emphasis to the bold wallpaper on the back wall.

Apparently, it's not paint--it's just pinstripe red and white wallpaper that got blurred thanks to image compression. But it gave us an idea: why wallpaper or paint an entire room? We're still in the initial stages of decorating our nephew's bedroom; and now we're thinking that it might be nice to have the impact wall (opposite the door) papered with playful graphics, and paint the other three walls a muted blue that goes with the wallpaper. What do you think?

Sure. An accent wall with pattern, or something. Might be easy to screw up, but done right, why not? Cheaper too. I see some of those vivid graphic patterns, and those would be really hard in all walls, but pretty as a portion.

I've just finished doing just that in the living room, and its turned out rather well if I do say so myself. I went with a fairly vivid green, patterned, paper on the one wall and a very pale grey on the others.

This has been a tried and true technique in my family for many years.

I think it would work well... big patterns in wallpaper can look intimidating on all four walls. I like the use of color here - walls aren't terribly expensive to change, so you can be bold without having to commit to it forever. The furniture will go well with lots of different backgrounds.

Variants I've seen include putting a bold print on a small or transitory space like an entry. Contrary to conventional wisdom you *can* paper a little enclosed space like a bathroom, but you have to have an eye for what works.

how long do you think the bold graphic wall trend will last?

i'm glad this room is safely tucked away in a magazine and not in my or any of my friends' homes.
