Rentagreenbox.com: A Zero Waste Moving Solution

earthfriendly_atla121007.jpgWe recently surveyed our readers about what they did with their empty household boxes, and many commentors mentioned using or donating boxes for moving purposes. A great idea, since reusing is preferable to recycling.

In a similar vein, EarthFriendlyMoving's Rentagreenbox.com packing and moving system forgoes the waste produced during the moving process by renting RecoPacks, containers made of plastic bottles and available in 5 different sizes, alongside recycled wrapping and packing paper (compost friendly), and corn based packing tape all delivered right to your home via vegetable oil and bio-fuel powered trucks. When you're all done with your move, they come back and pick up all the boxes/supplies, leaving your new home without the usual mess.

spencer1_atla121007.jpgFounder Spencer Brown is so confident of his service, he's currently offering first time customers their first 10 Recopacks free; just use the code "EFM-promo-01", good for one more per household with a minimum order required. We might have to take Spencer up on his offer next time we move. Moving packages start at $169 for two weeks and come with everything- recopacks, 100% recycled packing paper, geami ( replacement for bubble wrap), dolly, labels, markers, corn based packing tape and complete instructions.

Interesting! The last time I was called to active duty I bought recycled plastic containers to store items, rather than find enough cardboard boxes.
Right now the containers are in my parents' attic, but when my sister moves she'll be picking the containers up to assist with moving and then return before the next time I put my life into a storage unit.

As far as earth-friendly moving, I usually get boxes that I've already used many times before or boxes that I get from the local coffee place (plus side, the boxes are easy to handle, and they smell like roasted coffee beans..mmmm).

Also, when packing breakables, I use the plethora of t-shirts I have from years of running and from every promotional event known to man. You have to move them anyways, and they provide wonderful cushion for breakables. In my last move, all the glasses I packed with t-shirts came out fine, and the ones packed in tons of newsprint broke. Just another use for all of those tees in the back of your closet that you can't seem to part with.

But these boxes seem nice and sturdy!

I half expected to hear "and our workers, once they pass on, are cremated and their ashes are used to fertilize organic soy crops" in that pitch. ;)

I used rental plastic crates last time I moved - it was great! Cost almost exactly what buying new boxes would have (I am worried about insects so don't use vegetable or other used boxes).

Nice idea, seems better suited for people of means living in houses with garages and without lots of stuff to pack in boxes. If you need a LOT of boxes in which to move your stuff, or significant preparation time, this system could get very expensive. I used 130 boxes the last time I moved, which over a 3 week time period would have cost me at least $390 just for the boxes, not accounting for the actual cost of the move.

Hi John- I just read your e-mail and wanted to share some information with you and the other readers of this blog about rentagreenbox and earth friendly moving. We do rent the Recopack in three sizes for a buck a box a week. That's basically 15 cents a day. The benefit is that with my system, you would NOT have to use 130 boxes- more like 75 at most- as they come in three sizes that are 40% larger than cardboard. So, the cost for 3 weeks at 75 Recopacks is $235.00. The real savings happens when you are not wasting your time building and taping boxes. Then you can stack these in groups of 5 at a time. So either you or your movers can load 50% faster. So if you hire a moving company and they estimate 10 to 12 hours to move you- hey- use my system and they will pack, load and offload in 50% less time ( 6 hours x 100 an hour- wow hey there's 600 dollars less!). No crushed or broken items in transport, fast and easy to pack, even easier to nest after you are unpacked and its zero waste!

websites that feature eco friendly tips are cool. we should all take part in taking care of our planet. there are many ways that we can reuse, reduce and recycle.

moving into a new place is not an excuse to slack off being environment conscious. there are moving companies that use biodegradable materials and use bio fuel for their moving vans. make sure that you patronize these companies when relocating.

www.movingguide.net offers tips, advice and moving guidelines to everybody.
