My Great Outdoors: A Clean Culver City Courtyard

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Canada & Kirby
Location: Culver City, CA
Type of space: Courtyard with deck
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: We decided to add an outdoor space to the front of our house because we have tenants who use our backyard. Our front yard was the typical underutilized lawn. By building this outdoor room, we've added another 350 square feet onto our small bungalow. We also wanted to add something that would make our traditional 1940s home stand apart by adding clean lines, modern hardware and simple landscaping. The biggest challenge was to design a space that was private yet welcoming. We really wanted to make sure our neighbors didn't feel like we were shutting them out. One detail that helps is the dutch door (the top door mostly stays open). We completed this space about two months ago. We're enjoying morning coffee, afternoon BBQs and evening cocktails. It's our oasis in a very large and chaotic city.

How did you create it? Kirby is an architect and he designed this space. It was done on a very tight budget. We did some of the work ourselves to keep cost down (sealed all of the wood, painted, installed hardware, and built the flowerbed).

I love it. It's just beautiful, and what a great dog, too.

The fence (and the half gate) are just gorgeous.
