My Great Outdoors: Rudopal's Sonoran Desert Garden

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Rudopal
Location: Tucson, AZ
Type of space: Front porch-yard
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: My front porch is suitable for hanging out with a cup of coffee and watching the neighborhood. The area would probably look beige and lifeless, without bringing in elements that add a sense of coolness and color.

How did you create it? I created it by using low water plants that are suitable for the harsh desert environment. The yard is xeriscaped and on a drip system using reclaimed water. I chose different plants for various reasons; some have flowers and attract butterflies and hummingbirds, some have a nice scent, some add good cover and privacy, some look interesting and/or weird and add an element of drama. I did it gradually and over time and it is always a work in progress. At the moment it looks somewhat dried out because the temperatures reach into the 100's this time of year. In the fall and in the spring, I like to "refresh" everything by adding a few new plants and replacing those that don't survive.

Recommended store, site, product or resource? Many of the plants I obtained by gathering "pups" and pieces of plants already existing in the environment. I copied from the Sonoran Desert, which surrounds me. Other plants I got from local nurseries. The pots have been collected over time from various sources.

Go Tuscon! This looks like a great place to kick back with a margarita after work.
