Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: Our house is 1200 sq. feet so we really wanted to make our outdoor space feel like it was part of the house. I feel the style inside flows with our taste outside as well. We have a little 3 year old boy, so we really have incorporated some things for him to enjoy as well. We have a pool, a sandbox, an jacuzzi, a dining area, a few relaxing areas, a bbq area, it's a pretty big space so we tried to make different areas throughout, it actually helps to make the space feel more cozy.
How did you create it? It has evolved over time. We have worked on each area a little at a time. We ripped out a lot of the old landscaping, diseased fruit trees, bad planning, and replaced it with some drought tolerate plants. I have come to really love succulents. I have tried to use a lot of color, with plants and paint. We just recently finished the pool house which was there when we moved in. It was a red barn type structure and for a long time it was used for storage. We painted it, put in new carpet, bought a new front door, and some furniture. Now we have a little family room. We are going to really use it this summer! We have still have some unfinished areas to complete.
Recommended store, site, product or resource? I really use a lot of ideas from Sunset Magazine. Others are Dwell and of course, Apartment Therapy. Inspiration for the pool house from Modern Shed. Ikea, and Craigslist for Ikea furniture.

I sure do like how you broke the space up into rooms. Also, the way you embraced the mid century feel of the space. The sun shades especially are fantastic. You have a lot going on, and yet is feels uncluttered and spacious. Bravo!
PS -- The bench with the planters at either end? Nice! Where did you track that down at?

How do the sails hold up in the rain? Do they mildew?
I have to admit they look quite stunning and spa looking.

Thank you for all your nice comments. We have put a lot of work into it. Yes, the shade sails are from Ikea. We installed the shade sails in those areas because we desperately needed some escape from the sun. However, it also helped to create a feeling of a ceiling for the different spaces. The best thing was they were only about $30 a piece, more economical but just as functional than more expensive version. Also, they came with all of the hardware except the eye-hooks. The sails have held well under the weather so far, we will see under the hot sun this summer!
The bench was made by husband through in an article we found in Sunset Magazine. Thanks again, Shaunon.
