My Great Outdoors: Simone's Beachside Vintage
Brisbane

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Simone from Beach Vintage
Location: Brisbane, Australia
Type of space: Backyard

Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: My backyard plays a pretty big part in our lives as we live on the water and are outside alot of the time. I wanted to create a place with many different places to sit. Sit and have a drink, sit and read a book, sit and enjoy the view. Hence I went about placing different chairs about the place.

How did you create it?I purchased 2 daybeds and whitewashed them both. One sits under the jacaranda tree out front, the other on the deck. I also purchased an old dining table from Ebay and four bench chairs from the local refuse centre - this is our outdoor dining room. As luck would have it we had the chance to buy the little yellow boat that sits moored out front, so we did as it seemed to really "extend" our backyard. Then I came across a vintage yellow cane arm chair that I couldn't resist. It sits permanently on the waters edge. I love vintage nic nacs, so I added a vintage Australian Navy Life Ring and some vintage glass ship buoys. Along with lanterns, candles and folding directors chairs.

Can you recommended a store, site, product or resource you used to create your space? I don't usually buy from one particular source or store. I hardly ever buy new. I usually find some inspiration and then go about pulling the look together myself with bits and pieces.

  • Magazines - I have 4 huge scrapbooks full of tear sheets

  • Absolutely Beautiful Things - Anna's blog is pure inspiration for me

  • Ebay - It never ceases to amaze me what I can find there

  • Local Refuse/Tip Recycle Stores - Bargains Galore. My outdoor bench seats cost $10.00 for the set of 4. Already painted shabby blue too!

Thanks Simone!

Ok the pictures in this post are really beautiful ...

But - maybe you should consider changing the name of this website? when I come here for new ideas, most of the time I just leave feeling depressed about my apartment.....

I'm thinking a little white marine paint on something, anything and a yellow wicker chair, will take me there...any time I dare. Well done.
Cheers.

curious about what appear to be the roll down mosquito curtains (I've seen the commercial ones discussed on this site). Do they work? is it glassed in above or open as it appears? If the porch is open, I'm guessing I'm misinterpreting what these are and are used more for privacy?
thanks!
