Ace Hotel coming to Palm Springs!

For any design enthusiast, a trip to Seattle wouldn't be complete with out checking out the Ace Hotel. We love it's modern take on hotel decor, and are hoping to make a trip to Portland soon to check out their most recent location. Now, we just found out that they're planning on opening two more locations: one in New York, and the best news, one even closer to home- in Palm Springs! They are looking to remodel the former Howard Johnson's hotel and Denny's restaurant, located at 701 E. Palm Canyon. Ace Hotels bought the 4.5 acre property two months ago and is in the beginning development stages. The design will apaprently be "respectful of Palm Springs' style."We can't wait to see what they come up with!! Read more about it here. (via. The Desert Sun)

I like the Ace Hotel concept: good design, low-price, spartan accomodations, minimal amenities. Not so much a fan of the Ace Hotel reality: uncomfortable beds (stiff mattress with thin, scratchy beddings), inadequately insulated guestrooms (at least the one I had in Seattle), cruiseship-sized private bathroom or communal bathroom, minimal amenities. I guess if you're in your early 20's and don't expect much more than hostel-like accomodations with a hipster patina, then the Ace is for you. But during my stay, I honestly felt like I was being punished; or staying in a posh rehab facility for errant models and indie rockers.

Curious to see how the concept flies in Palm Springs on non-Coachella weekends. I think Ace will need to step up their game a bit for this location if they want to cater to the L.A. weekender who's used to much more. At the very least, they'll need to: aspire to Standard Hotel standards; acquire a liquor license for the restaurant space; step up their customer service game at the front desk; spend money on better mattresses and nicer beddings.

the seattle location opened in 2000, and is indeed minimal. (an upgrade is overdue). the portland location is much more plush, with higher grade finishes like super comfortable beds, 100% cotton sheets, flat screen tv's and turntables in the superior rooms. also, the bar/restaurant is incredible and the stumptown in the lobby make it a complete stay. (each room is hand-painted by local artists. and it is paint, not vinyl.)

I say, bring on Ace everywhere in the new year! I'm writing this from the Seattle hotel, and while it's not as up to date as the Portland site (which is only one neighborhood away from my home), it is fantastic.
