One of our favorite pastimes is losing ourselves in the fantasy of living in a modern little prefab on a hill. Often, reality comes crashing in when we realize how expensive prefabs can be. Then we imagine being able to DIY something (not that we've ever built even a treehouse) but if we were to tackle building our dream house, we'd start right here with some (almost) free plans for 3 different styles of tiny homes:
Free Green is offering up 3 plans for homes in the 525 square foot realm. The only catch is you have to subscribe to their site which costs about $20 for the year. In addition to the tiny houses they're also getting ready to launch plans for what they're calling the Modern Lake House and the Ranch House, both of which would satisfy those who need a tad (ok, a lot) more space. We love that their designs are simple (and even veer a bit traditional) and modern and are designed to be green by consuming very little energy.
Free home plans abound. You can get the Sears kit home plans, which were the ne plus ultra of their day.
The Sears kits were so easy to build, many are still around today, and they're much more cost effective than these silly prefabs.

question--is there a difference between prefab homes and modular homes?

I'd love a tiny house. The problem is finding somewhere to put one that doesn't conflict with building codes. In my area, the minimum is at least 1000 sq ft and the area I want to move to has a minimum of 1200 sq ft. Anybody live in an area where there is no minimum sq ft requirement?

Do you really have to sign up for $20 just to see the floor plans?
