California Friendly Garden Contest

060407calfriend.jpg
A California Friendly garden? Since our Southern California summer's are generally dry, conserving water in our gardens is key. Corona Del Mar's famed Rogers Gardens is holding a contest for Orange County residents called the California Friendly Garden Contest. "California Friendly" is defined as yards that display plants and flowers in a water-conserving environment..."

Winners will be selected for their garden's beauty, use of low-water plants, irrigation efficiency, organic uses and water conservation. Nearly $5000 in cash prizes will be awarded. It's easy to enter. Just take three pictures of your front yard and fill out a brief online form. You can see some of the current entries here. They also have a great "inspiration" page. All the info is here at their website. Contest entry deadline is June 17th, 2007.

love. love. love. succulents. Wende in Phoenix and I went plant shopping one afternoon, and the succulents were just eyepoppingly beautiful.

it's a bit of a schlep, but the green arrow nursery in northridge has a GREAT selection of succulents (in the small 2" pots especially) at fantastic prices. I always like to buy my succulents small because I know that they will grow quickly and then I can break off pieces to start more. Anyone want to start a succulent swap?

For inspiration, I found these flickr pictures (click here) of the Desert garden at the Huntington.
