Recently, our local architecture and design community was presented with a call for entries for a slightly unusual competition called
CANstruction. As seen in today's
LA times Calendar section,
CANstruction is a nationwide circuit competition started by the
Society for Design Adminitration, which is an affiliate of the
American Institute of Architects. The competition basically consists of teams that create structures completely made up of canned foods. At the close of the exhibition, all of the sculptures are taken down and are distrubuted to local food banks, shelters, and day care centers.
Started in 1992 in New York, the event will make its Los Angeles area debut this week. Categories include best structural ingenuity, best use of labels, best meal and the coveted, "juror's favorite." Actual construction begins tonight (Sept. 28) from 9:30pm to 9:30am Friday at the
Westfield Fashion Square Mall in Sherman Oaks. 14006 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423. The event officially opens Friday (sept 29). Hours: 0am to 9pm, Monday through Friday; 10am -7pm Saturday, and 11am-6pm Sunday. Ends Oct 4. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of canned goods. Canstruction NYC - November 10 - 22, 2006
The New York Design Center hosts the 16th Annual CANSTRUCTION Competition & Gala Reception, organized by the AIA and the SDA. Teams of Architects, engineers, and contractors are given one night to build fantastic structures out of canned and boxed food. In select showrooms, view the objects before they are disassembled and donated to the Food Bank of New York City.
