Did anyone happen to catch the 11 o'clock news last night on KABC7? They featured a before/after home segment, where the homeowner had used this website called DesignerAtHome.com. Designer At Home.com is a site based in Orange County, lead by designer James Charles. The site offers to professionally design a room in your home for just $250...
You simply answer some questions and provide some measurements and pictures. They in return will send you a color/inspiration board, with swatches, space plan, instructions and lists of resources and you actually do the buying and putting it all together yourself. Here is an intro video that explains it:
At the end of the segment, they mentioned that if you didn't want to pay the $250, there are a bunch of websites that are forum based and can offer great free design advice. They of course flashed Apartmenttherapy on the screen! I took a snapshot off the tv. (Sadly, AT isn't linked on the online version of the segment.) Anyway, check out DesignerAtHome.com here. They also have a blog. You can view the actual segment on KABC7 here.
I think that is a really great idea...and very inexpensive! However, you must really be able to have an eye to put these things together. It is always easier if a professional does this for you. It's just not the same!
It sounds inexpensive, but it still costs $250 a room, and you have to pay before you know what you're getting. That makes me nervous. And they don't offer any kind of guarantee if I don't like it. Designerathome.com also doesn't show any examples of their work. I wonder why. I found another designer offering the same service: Interiordesignserviceonline.com, and they have a guarantee. They both charge the same amount, although the second one has a bigger discount for more than one room. I'll bet more designers will try to sell this service. I'll wait and see.
