Following up on yesterday's post about the latest Global Bazaar collection at Target, I stopped by a different one close by to see if the Starburst mirror I was eyeing came in yet. Turns out it did so I was able to get a close up inspection! And... in the immortal words of Alicia Silverstone in Clueless... it's a "full on Monet..."...
"...From far away it's Ok, but up close it's a big ol' mess... "

Well, I admit I'm exaggerating a bit, but it just wasn't what I had hoped it was going to be. What I thought was a metal center was actually woven rattan. It also had some funny gold leafing on the tip of the inner rays that didn't look... right? Perhaps they were trying to combine something more ethnic with something mid-century modern- which is a great concept- but somehow I felt the execution wasn't that successful (and not for that price!) I suppose it could look great in the right setting, but if you're looking for more of a classic mid-century-esque piece, then I think I'd rather pay the extra and go for the Crate&Barrel one, (which I've seen in person and it's stunning.)

However, there definitely are some great buys in the collection, particularly much of the ceramics and smaller accessories. Some of the lamps looked pretty good too, including this faux Ming Dynasty-esque one and this woven wood one. The complete collection is still rolling out onto shelves this week, but it's definitely worth a look-see if you're by a Target store.
Keep watching these items. They always go on sale and then always go on clearance and then the deals get just too good to pass up.

Anyone who quotes Clueless is ok in my book.

Yes, clearance is definitely significant. I think the expiration date on the online coupons give us a ballpark of when that'll be. Last year thing's went clearance after about a month. It seemed rather sudden, but then Target does have that "get it while it lasts" agenda to make people buy right away.
The picture frames rock.

I saw the mirror the other day, it's kinda cute... It was 40-50 bucks I think, which for rattan at Target (TO ME) is kind of expensive. I think their "world" line is very nice to get an accent pillow or the unexpected 3 foot buddha, but the furni, home fragrance, etc... is overpriced and too cheap looking. Then again, they face such a nasty dilemma... low price it and end up with an IKEA reputation, or keep up their prices and have bloggers talking about how cheap that specific line is. Either way, no-one will agree; some will buy it some won't and some will sneak up at clearance time. lol

There was another style of sunburst mirror there as well - all silver-colored with some kind of capiz shell detailing. I liked that one better.

Target don't care about bloggers. They have a very specific, successful angle. They sell very pretty things for very low dollars to the masses. It may be cheap but the pretty sucks you in. And their "Design For All" mission is pretty cool. You can have a cool environment, whatever your circumstances, in the style of your choice.

I noticed they've also ripped off (or uhm, taken design inspiration from, ahem) the Crate and Barrel Starburst bowl, which I've loved forever on CB, but it costs $150! Then I was roaming around the Target Bazaar yesterday, and saw one, for only $15!? Of course the CB one is really well done; but I bought the Target version, took it home, and love it! I might pick up some bronze spray paint, and it'll look even more like the CB version (right now it's a dark brown/black.)

yes, the rattan totally ruins that mirror for me too. I guess they had to add the whole "global" influence to it. I looked on Target.com and found lots of cool, sunburst style mirrors on clearance. It's worth checking out, and if you order one online and it looks chintzy when you get it, you can just return it to the store.

If anyone is interested in another Starburst mirror that is slightly more affordable, albeit not quite as cool, than the C&B one, I just stumbled across this here: http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_US/currency/en_US/3130-005-4.html

I have several Target World Market items in my house. It's fun, it's a bit kitsch-ie, and if you don't go overboard on it, it can work without looking too cheap or wannabe.
