Katrina Cottages: affordable housing

04_07katrinahousing.jpgNew York designer Marianne Cusato came up with this predesigned cottage [not prefab] for the alternative to the FEMA trailers. Some how it's materials are listed as hurricane, termite and rot resistant [does that mean plastic?]. Floor plans range from 544 to 936 sq. ft and are currently being sold by Lowes stores in Mississippi and Louisiana.

According to the website: The cottages will be sold as both blueprints and materials packages. The packages, which will cost approximately $55 sq ft will include all materials necessary to build the cottage from the foundation

plate up: studs, insulation, fixtures, electrical, plumbing and even appliances. The homeowner will only need to supply the foundation, HVAC, and a contractor to assemble.

Though maybe not your dream home in theory, hats off to an inventive low cost housing creation.

They can totally be that. They are actually designed so that you put them on your washed out lot and live in them while you rebuild your house. You can either assimilate them into your big house or leave them detached like a little workshop or mother-in-law cottage.

They are real deal houses and are not plastic. I've been inside of one. (I'm from Biloxi, MS).
