OMD Prefab Showroom Open

venprefab2.jpg
Like many AT readers, we follow the prefab trend with curious optimism, hoping the homes become a viable and affordable architectural movement available beyond the pages of Dwell magazine. But it’s one thing to daydream over printed pages and another to walk through the actual space. If prefab is a future consideration for your next home purchase (or if you’re just optimistic, daydreaming renters like ourselves), we recommend heading down to 1650 Abbot Kinney in Venice, where you can “test drive” a prefab space in person.

venprefab3.jpg Architectural firm Office of the Mobile Design has setup and opened to the public their 720 sq. ft model take home, a modular 16’x20’ steel frame home. Appointed with Plyboo and Durapalm flooring, a Boffi kitchen and bathroom, and a long linear layout perfect for two, we were impressed with the airy layout. We were informed it takes roughly between 2-3 months for setup upon delivery onto site, and additional units could be stacked to create multi-level spaces.

More info available by emailing info@designmobile.com. Showroom open to the public, Tuesdays and Fridays, 11am-4pm.

There are some really great prefabs beginning to hit the US market. You should also check out the Breeze House, Wee House, and my current favorite Marmol Radziner Prefab.
