Oprah's Katrina Registry: Helping Victims Can Be Fun!

oprah sept 26.jpgH.R.M. Queen Oprah has pledged 10 million of her own money to help the victims of Katrina. She has also started a way to help out the devastated with her Katrina Home Registry. People can go onto her website and purchase everything for the home the same way you might buy a place setting for a wedding.

We love Oprah and understand that she knows best(can you say Book club?), but to us this registry idea is kind of odd in a “helping victims can be fun!” sort of way. At the end of the day, if it helps restore people's lives, who are we to judge? (although in theory, we just did)

How is this sick? She doesn't market it as "fun" on her show, I don't know where you got that from. The registry is just a convenient format. You can buy an entire room, an entire home, or just a toaster; that we all can do a small thing that will actually go to people who need these things. Real, tangible things. Not just money that will go to these people's massive debt, but so they actually have homes to go to. She covers all of the administrative costs for her Angel Network, and I really don't know any other organization where everything you donate goes to those in need.

Oprah has a lot more substance than you give her credit for, she is constantly helping regular people in need in this country, and her show has much more substance than a lot of what is on tv (she covered the Congo when everyone is ignoring it). I don't know any other media personality that uses their power for good as much as she does. Seriously, no one even comes close.

You said it, who are you to judge.

Yes, scazza,

we were being flip. We just found the registry concept a little "cute" for the drama that people are dealing with, and we heard her talk about it while also showing off her phat new set and gabbing with Jen about life after Brad. Context is everything.

We agree that Oprah does more to help than most people who are paid to do so.

scazza,

we share the same appreciation for the work that oprah does. she is amazing and thank you for mentioning that 100% of the money donated to her charity goes to the people that need it. i personally love the idea of a registry for items that help to make a home comfortable, isn't that what we all tune in to this website for? i don't think it's "odd" and the fact that her viewers donated over $800,000 in goods within the first three days is evidence enough that it works. she's reaching people, and i applaud the people that came up with the idea.

Alec, Perhaps you should watch the special two day program that Oprah aired days after the hurricane. It was here that she showed the extent of the damage and told personal stories with much more accuracy and truth than any other broadcast I have seen. I don't think the registry is "cute", I think it is a unique idea to help the people that she met while in New Orleans, the people that she made a promise not to forget.

Alec,
This post is in such bad taste, I can't even believe it. You're mocking someone for helping hurricane victims? I think the registry is a great idea, it's a way for people to help in a concrete way and not just throw money into the void of need.
