apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

San Francisco Party Proposal

02-27--bar-scene-.jpg 02-27--bar-scene-.jpg 02-27--bar-scene-.jpg
Apartment Therapy will be kicking off our Smallest, Coolest Apartment Contest with parties in New York and Los Angeles on Thursday, March 9th and we're hoping that our San Francisco friends will join in.

Since some of you have already started to connect via the open threads, we thought it would be great if San Francisco hosted a little kick-off party, as well. If any locals are interested in helping with some organization (a good San-Fran bar would be great for starters), let us know here and we’ll connect via this post.

Well, if last night's impromptu get-together with wende, ebrown and aquarabbit was any indication, the proposed March 9 SF event should be great fun. These folks were lovely company, and the conversation lively!

Hi guys:

What kind of venue were you looking at? My partner and I live in downtown San Francisco, at the edge of the Financial District. We live right next door to a cool bar/club called Fluid.

Here is their website:

I'm game for anything so long as it's a reasonable distance from BART.

posted by ebrown on 2006-02-27 18:04:59

Yeah Fluid is on Mission a block down from 3rd. It's 2 blocks down from the Montgomery Street BART station.

The space has recently been re-done in the last year or two I believe. If you want to see it person, I believe they do happy hour during the week.

Rx Gallery is another good possibility... It's both a gallery and a nice wine/sake bar, and close to Powell Street BART and MUNI. They have had some really nice shows there, and the space is big but not tooo big. Has anyone else been here before?

I'm also happy to help organize, if needed. I can take pictures too, if someone reminds me to bring my camera!

can i come too? i may have been blinded, but i can't see what day/night this is planned for. has a bar been chosen?

The Clift Hotel has a beautiful bar. http://www.clifthotel.com

Good luck on picking a place. I miss SF.

I will come! I work within a couple blocks of Fluid.

A suggestion: someone with a strong opinion needs to just make an executive decision on the location and then take care of working with AT to have the pre-paid tab set up. (I'm not volunteering, as I don't have an opinion and may have jury duty tomorrow and/or Thursday.)

As Northern Californians, it is part of our culture to be better at exploring open-ended options than at making decisions... but there are free drinks at stake here, folks!

Fluid please!

From the description, it is how I want my living room to look. Must see the implementation!

Also, are we talking happy hour or afterwards?

Hey! I live in a studio, and it's small and cool. I may come to the party. I am entertained by this website and threads...

I've been to RX and it has a weird layout which can be awkward for socializing. They do have great music there though for dancing.

I've got a prefab in St. Helena (see New York Times -- think the pix are also online -- 2005 "fab prefab".
Are you getting together Thursday?
Will there be anything to look at -- ie designs?

Thanks!

I will be "there" wherever "there" is. Either location sounds great. Too bad Enrique is going to be at the Los Angeles site. owell. He's a man at home in many places.

Who's making the AT arrangements?

posted by ebrown on 2006-03-07 13:36:51

Carol! I remember your pre-fab VERY WELL! omigawsh! I lurve your space. In fact, I saved the article for a while...although it's now gone. Looking forward to meeting you.

Wende, will you be attired in orange?

posted by ebrown on 2006-03-07 13:39:30

Am trying to juggle things so I can be there. . .

ebrown, isn't there a rule that I have to wear orange for all AT events? I'm thinking this sounds like the occasion for the orange striped shirt with the French cuffs. It's VERY loud -- and the lighting wherever will probably wash it out to six shades of gray.

Fluid sounds good and it's a great location for all of us working near downtown. We can head there directly from work.

All... Even though I won't be there, I want to advise against the Redwood Room at the Clift on a Thursday evening--it may already be booked up (and even if it isn't, their door policy isn't the kindest in SF--unless you've reserved in advance). Don't put yourself through that since there are so many other options.

wende: I think you can remember the "gracious" host initially telling me that all the booths were taken when we arrived (that is, until I flashed my room key, told him that I was a frequent hotel guest and discreetly dropped the Head of Corporate Sales' name--then magically a booth for 8 opened up)?

posted by Enrique on 2006-03-07 14:28:39

Oh, yes, I remember that well! Incidents where charming men discreetly flash things always stick in my memory.

Joking aside, folks, the RWR was very much focused on small parties with reserved niches in their nooks. It's more a place for a discreet little dinner than a spot with the space, lighting, and flexibility for meeting a large but unspecified number of people you don't recognize by sight.

Please keep access to Public Transportation an important consideration when choosing the bar. I like the Cliff House, but it is so far away.

posted by A. on 2006-03-07 16:03:35

I can't tell if the bar has been picked yet - but Martuni's is always good.

posted by A. on 2006-03-07 16:07:31

It turns out that work (art work, not work work) may force me to be quite late on Thursday night, or could tear me away completely.

I have not been to Fluid, but if others vote that it is a nice space and easy to get to, it sounds great and I will make every effort to be there!

posted by aquarabbit on 2006-03-07 16:37:05

So shall the vino flow at Fluid?

posted by ebrown on 2006-03-07 17:14:23

There's solid support for Fluid and no actual objections. I think it's a wonderful moment to declare Fluid as the official venue.

posted by wende in san francisco on 2006-03-07 17:37:02

What time?

posted by Ebrown on 2006-03-08 09:36:16

I'm working from home tomorrow so I can be there at noon. (joking)

How does 6-ish work for everyone? Is that considered "right after work?"

posted by Heather on 2006-03-08 11:34:16

Can anyone come? Or is this a private affair? I just learned about this website today.

posted by Farzaneh on 2006-03-08 12:46:40

Wende, FLUID it is, we're calling the bar tonight and can't wait to see pics on Friday.... We'll post more tomorrow...

I rarely leave mon lit, dahling, but I can be there at 6:00 so long as i can feed my tiger before I leave. And where's Andrae?

Farzaneh, welcome to the wacky world of AT-SF. See ya at Fluid.

Hi Everyone:

I have been slammed with work and just saw the in-put from everyone.

So Fluid tonight, March 9 at 6pm?

Will be great to finally meet everyone.

posted by Mark Hermogeno on 2006-03-09 10:02:24

If you're planning to use mass transit to get there, check http://sfgate.com/ before heading to the station. BART into San Francisco and MUNI on the Market St. Subway were shut down half an hour ago due to a fire between the Embarcadero and Montgomery stations. There's no time prediction for when service will resume.

SFGate.com article is linked from my name, as BART's own site doesn't include any news.

posted by wende in san francisco on 2006-03-09 10:14:17

BART is going to do bus service from West Oakland to Civic Center until things are cleaned up, probably starting around noon.

posted by wende in san francisco on 2006-03-09 10:33:58

Don't know how busy happy hour will be.

Any ideas on how to find people? I'll wear some glow in the dark jewelry if I can find it.

posted by Heather on 2006-03-09 10:55:32

Urf! It's looking really unlikely that I will be able to make it tonight. I will do my best, and will hopefully arrive with a good story to tell!

i just found this site today and really like it! i just read about event tonight...is it ok to come??

posted by wende in san francisco on 2006-03-09 15:13:52

so, really, how do we find each other?

posted by ali on 2006-03-09 15:58:44

Drat, unable to juggle things so I can be there. . .really wanted to meet everyone, but it will have to be at the next soiree. Have a drink for me!

Heck of a good question, Ali, and since I've had a sick headache all day, I don't know if I'm going to be there to try to solve it.

I still think the answer is to have photos of one's apartment laminated and made into large brooches, but it's a little late for that now.

posted by wende in san francisco on 2006-03-09 17:27:18

i'm still stuck at work... so i'm not sure if i'm going to make it either (so sad). but i want to see pictures of you all holding up laminated photos of your apartments.

posted by ali on 2006-03-09 17:36:41

Carol Troy,
i remember that article + liking your space quite a bit...GO fab prefab!!

posted by orange red on 2006-03-09 18:34:11

OK. Heather was there. I was there. No one else was there. The bartender refused to AT-tab our drinks. But who cares? I got the chance to meet the beautiful and multi-talented Heather. Although the party was more like a date, I had a great time and it was worth the BART ride in the rain. Also got a sight (little drawing) of Heather's new apt. in the Mission. So neat. Pocket doors anyone? Plus we bonded over paint chips. Only Apt therapists do that.
