Takashi Murakami at MOCA

Murakami Mania! Are any of you planning on checking out the big Murakami exhibit that opens next week at MoCA? They're having a preview reception this weekend, and the official opening is on October 29th, 2007. Those of you unfamiliar with Murakami, might recognize his playful characters that were most famously used by Louis Vuitton for their bags that were all the rage a few years ago.

The retrospective at MoCA will be featuring more than 90 works in various media, spanning the early 1990's to the present. There will also be an official Louis Vuitton Murakami shop at MoCa, as part of the exhibit. Apparently LV has guaranteed that enough merchandise will be produced to last the duration of the exhibit. Yes, agree with denada. Amazing and definitely worth seeing. The full-room installations (with wallpaper featuring the main motifs in the artwork) were pretty impressive. Also, nice attention to detail: Murakami Flower motif carpeting in the screening room.

Made it to the member reception right as it began. So the crowds weren't as ridiculous early in the evening. But by the time we left, there was such a mad crush of people of people in reception tent/staging area for the museum that we didn't even stay for an adult beverage or hear much of DJ Krush's set (though we never got a close enough look at the DJ to confirm that it was Krush). The lure of French Dipped sandwiches and macaroni salad at Philippe's was too great. Also, wanted to check out the Dia de Los Muertos celebration that night at the Hollywood Forever cemetary, which itself was whole 'nother kind of clusterf***, but also worth seeing!

My favorite moment of the Murakami event was watching a small group of cosmetically-enhanced and impeccably Beverly Hills matrons and their husbands carrying out their purchases from the musuem's Murakami/LV shop. Oh yeah, there was art too... God, I love L.A.

went there as well. the party was insane i loved the set up in/out. didnt get to see the exhibit yet, too longo of a line and i rather go again and see it in peace w/o having to deal with the above mentioned BH matrons.

but i loved the atmosphere.
