apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

UPDATE! Be Jane : Ellen Hong

112706eh1.jpg
Over the summer, Vanessa posted an open call for potential "Janes" for the DIY show Be Jane, on MSN. One of our very own ATLA readers, Ellen Hong, actually got selected and had her dining room/living room as the feature of a makeover. Ellen sent us some pics of the "before" and "after" and said she is thrilled with the results. "The "Janes" (hosts, Heidi and Eden)aren't acting, they really know their stuff!" explained Ellen. "It was a really dramatic do!" We have to agree, the results are stunning! Congrats Ellen! Check out the before/after pics after the jump, and click here to see the fun video footage of the episode! And if you have your own before/after project- please share with us! send us an email or post it flickr and tag it with "apartmenttherapyla".

Nice transformation! The light green looks surprisingly cozy and I love those broad stripes. Great lighting too.

Ellen,

Fantastic job! So much brighter and spacious. Really clean and organic looking... and I really fancy the wall color and technique.
Congrats to you on a job well done.

The best thing about this room makeover is that Ellen was key in the transformation! She built most of the wall unit herself! You can find instructions on how to build one yourself at http://www.bejane.com/BJDIY20061026248. Good luck, and glad to hear that you like the result.

Oops - sorry, the URL I used above was taking the period into consideration - please use this http://www.bejane.com/BJDIY20061026248 to see how you can build the wall unit. Thanks!

I love the pretty bowl object between the bookshelves. It looks just like a decorative "serving bowl" from Target. I found one on the discount racks last month and made it into an attractive ceiling lamp by simply covering my old ugly one.
It's not on the Target website anymore - but this one is simlar: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_4/601-3686283-6644904?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000F62SCM

Looks great!! ... I was wondering where the TV ended up? Is it in the far corner?

What's great is that Be Jane successfully made 2 spaces out of one big room, but tied it together with the stripes. They show you how to do everything on their awesome website, BeJane.com. It was really easy and fairly inexpensive. Their free tutorials cover stuff like "Enhance your home's sex appeal" and "What's that smell!?" and "Silence a squeaky floor."

The TV ended up in a different room, by the way.
