What's New at Pier One?

021108_pier.jpg

So ever since they abolished their online store we've been wondering what's up with Pier One.

Well we keep getting the catalog in the mail and we aren't disappointed but we can't say that we're blown away by massive changes to the overall look like we were sort of expecting. But the catalog has done its job and we're curious to get into a Pier One to check out some of our favorites:

Buri Hanging lantern on sale for $49
Serena Table Lamp on sale for $99
Fluted Teardrop Lamp
Glass Cubes Lamp on sale for $49
Emmeline cafe Storage on sale for $199

They still appear to carry 'world' furniture with some new Hollywood Regency inspired pieces (which we remember them starting to carry last year) and some brighter younger colors. So the palette is changing, little by little. Have you noticed a change at your local Pier One?

The Teardrop Lamp is only $99 now?? Two weeks ago it was still $125. I'm getting two of them asap. Only thing... they're really hard to find now. I could only find one store that still had them and they only have two left.
Nice and heavy though. Heavier than anything similar you'll find at any other store.

I checked out a store in manhattan recently and liked a bunch of stuff. The $29 lamps weren't shabby either! I would have bought one had I not been meeting someone a bit later.

I noticed the price drop on the lamps in the Manhattan store last week. I wanted a pair of the blue lamps, but the second one in the store was damaged. Then I found out I could order them for the same price. Call the store Sleek, and ask if you can order the Teardrop. I just have to go into the store to pick up my lamps when they arrive (about 10 days).

I did notice a more modern feel in my last couple of visits. A lot of their stuff feels/looks pretty cheap, but there are some finds. Definitely worth a trip to the store. They have some curtains there right now in 4 or 5 different colors, with large silver grommets and they're also lined, for around $40 a panel.

Some of the usual schlock...but some really cool new (colorful!) pieces too. I am coveting the yellow wallpaper that's in many of the photoshoots. Anyone know what it is? Source?

I saw a very pretty red vanity/desk with a butterfly motif and matching chair at my local Pier One. I think there was also a matching sideboard or dresser. I would love to get it, but it is out of my price range right now. I hope it goes on sale.

rumour in the industry is that their investment group may be pulling the plug on them entirely. Usually this is what happens next when you see assets starting to be tidied up. (closing online store, closing pier one kids, closing several brick and mortar locations)

they already did so with Bombay and Mikasa.(which they also backed)

Pier one is rumoured to be next.

don't know if it is true.

I adore Pier one (though I hate their lack of online shopping). I just bought some tumblers from them that are extremely similiar to the Fleur-de-Lys glasses that Anthropologie has. And for less than half the price!

The Emmeline cafe Storage is pretty bad in quality. I was in there the other day with my wife, and although it looks like wood, i feels like it is made of plastic, and feels hollow if you knock your hand on it.

They have a bookcase this same teal color right now which is kind of nice, holds the books on an angle. They also have a console table and a small hutch with some drawers this color (i think they really like the teal right now). We really liked the small hutch type thing, i don't remember the same of it. it was wood, made pretty nicely and was cute. it would even work as a small entertainment center. I'm hoping if the stores are closing anytime soon we could pick it up cheap.

Check the website, folks. They feature current sale items and catalogs. The catalogs feature a lot of what's on offer, but not all. Esp. kitchen/dining stuff.

I'm glad they brought back the Buri lantern, though I can't figure how to hang it tastefully. I wish it were a chandelier. I'm in love with the Bali mirror and the Adah desk and chair (metal aqua with glass top). Also, the furniture catalog features a few new bistro dining sets.

I saw someone leave the store and pull a Nippon stool out of Pier 1's dumpster on 15th Street last Friday.

I would be very sad if Pier One went out of business, its not like I would want my whole house to be P1 but I guess its more sentimental...I bought my first piece of furniture there, a solid wood kitchen table. It is over 10 years old and still in perfect shape, although it has been painted and I'm going to paint it again....

I usually skip the Pier asI find it patently offensive in its "Asian, Indian, Morrocan, insert_culture_here-contemporary" However, I needed something to dress up my new sofa (yay DWR Floor sale!) and so I stoped in to scour their wall o' throw pillows. I happily discovered this great cream colored pillow with embroidered & applique'd shapes ala 1950's. The fact that they were cheap and that the colors matched the couch AND the curtains was too good to be true!

Now, if I ever need a 9 foot wood and hammered copper giraffe or a giant gilded buddha face, I know where to go!

I work at Pier 1. As of right now there is no news of them closing but they are trying to change things up alot. They are fazing out the more modern pieces and bringing in alot more wicker and shelf goods. Also the Buri Lantern is available in a different shape too, I can't think of what it is called though.. The red desk and chair are new, they will also be coming out with another set that is blue with birds on it. But basically all of the lamps or on sale and they have some bedroom sets that are marked down ALOT.

Pteetsa, I saw the red sideboard w/butterflies at the NYC store. If you see those pieces go on sale, just try ordering the sideboard at the store if they don't have it in stock. Not surprised to hear they're getting the same pieces in blue - half the stuff in the store is blue right now.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them go out of business. They seem to have lost whatever focus they had.

I gave up on Pier One when they insisted in spraying scents so strong that I couldn't breathe as soon as I entered the store. When I managed to talk to someone in the store about it (around the sleeve I was holding over my nose) they said it was Pier One policy that they had to do the scents.

Hopefully that has changed since then!

I miss the old, original Pier 1, the one that was just like World Market, only better because you never new what might turn up. Sure, it was full of fake flowers and papasan chairs, but those old bins packed with painted Indian boxes and swedish bath soaps were so much fun. I miss that. I stopped paying attention to them when they went all faux pottery barn in the '90s. If they're going back to their wickery roots, then I say huzzah!

Went over to the one in my neighborhood (Marina del Rey) yesterday....and it was GONE, without a trace! I was stunned, as this was a big store and had been there for years! There was no sign, notice....nothing. And I had just been in it a couple of months ago. Although there was a lot that wasn't my style, I did like it overall. I have a lamp and pillows and curtains from there. And I think the one in West L.A. is gone too, judging from the store locater on their website. I'm sad to see it go.
